Annika didn't answer.
Her silence was a blow that left Conrad reeling. A fire blazed in his dark eyes, and his lips twisted into an icy smile. “Let me tell you something, Annika. If I wanted to get rid of Hank, he would have been dead a thousand times over.”
When Conrad found out Hank had gone behind his back to help her, he'd felt a murderous rage. But it was just a feeling. He had never actually done anything to him.
“And what about Harrison? Are you going to deny you were behind that?” Annika pressed, unwilling to let him off the hook. “I know you hate me for getting rid of the baby, but Serena is carrying your child now. If you love her, you should be focused on building a life with her. I don't understand why you're torturing me like this. Or is it that you can't stand it when someone who was once so obedient no longer listens to you? Are you just trying to make me bow to you again? Fine, Conrad. I'll do what you want. Just let Harrison go.”
Staring into her eyes, Conrad was stunned. He swallowed hard. “Is that what you really think?” he asked, his voice raw. That he was tormenting her just to make her obedient again?
“Isn't it?” she retorted.
He turned away, squeezing his eyes shut against the raw pain that made them burn. “Get out.” The word was forced from his constricted throat.
“Hank is still in the ICU. If he doesn't wake up, Conrad, I will make you pay for this.”
With that, Annika turned and walked away.
Conrad slowly turned back, his eyes blazing. He had never been falsely accused before, and the feeling was a suffocating mix of pain and bitterness that stole his breath.
