Chapter 656
“You… don’t want to tell me?” Lydia asked.
She had been patient-waiting, giving him time-but ever since she asked that question, Cale had chosen silence. As if it were something so easy for him to ignore.
“Not every promise… is something you need to know,” Cale said shortly.
The answer left Lydia stunned.
“What?” She shifted in her seat, turning toward him more fully. “What kind of answer is that?”
Cale exhaled slowly. From the corner of his eye, he could see clearly his wife was upset, pressing him for the truth about the promise he had made to the Chen family.
No.
She didn’t need to know this.
Not yet.
He would tell her…. when there was no longer any risk left.
Yes.
That was what he would do—for now.
“So you really won’t tell me?” Lydia asked again, her arms now folded across her chest, her gaze fixed on him in clear irritation.
“Yes,” Cale replied flatly.
“You’re unbelievable,” Lydia snapped.
“I know.”
The rest of the drive back to the hotel passed in a silence thick enough to press against them both.
But Cale didn’t seem bothered by it.
All he cared about was keeping Lydia away from things she didn’t need to know. The rest… he would handle himself.
Until there was nothing left to worry about.
Because he knew-anything involving the Chen family… and Don Falcon… was never simple.
And he refused to let Lydia get caught in it. He knew too well how dark-how cruel-the world he once walked in could be.
Back then.
By the time they arrived at the hotel, the air between them felt heavy. Awkward.
Lydia said nothing at all. And Cale made no effort to ease the tension. What had she expected, anyway?
Cale Miller had always been stubborn-unyielding in ways that frustrated her more than she liked to admit.
In the end, as always… Lydia was the one who had to give in. She couldn’t keep things like this–not all the way until they went home.
She let out a long breath as she slipped off her coat and shoes.

“What do you want for dinner, Cale?”
The question made Cale stop in his tracks.
He looked at Lydia, a flicker of confusion crossing his face-but slowly, it softened into something warmer, more relaxed. What do you feel like having? I heard the hotel restaurant’s salmon steak is highly recommended. Want to try it?”
Hearing that-and seeing his expression-whatever irritation and frustration Lydia had been holding onto began to fade.
“Yes, I’d like to try it.”
“Alright. Order me an Americano as well.”
Lydia nodded. “I’ll place the order right away and… I think I need a shower.”
A faint smirk tugged Cale’s lips. “Want me to join you?”
Lydia rolled her eyes. “Don’t make me annoyed with you again, darling.”
“Why?” Cale closed the distance between them in a few long strides, catching Lydia off guard and making her step back until-
“What’s wrong with a husband accompanying his wife in the shower?” His hands came to rest on either side of her, caging her n. He leaned closer, close enough to make Lydia hold her breath for a second.
‘Cale,” Lydia warned. “Showering with you will only make us go to bed too late. Besides, I’m tired-and I’m sure you are too.”
‘Hm… what about after dinner?”
Lydia clicked her tongue softly, though a small smile slipped through as she pushed him back a little. “No.”
n the end, Cale let her go, albeit reluctantly. “Alright, alright.” He pressed a brief kiss to her forehead. “Go ahead and shower irst. I still have something to discuss with Liu.”
.ydia nodded, though her mind filled with questions again at the mention of Liu. As far as she knew, he was the only one Cale poke to about that girl.
‘Did you receive the contract draft I sent? Brandon has a lot of opportunities for us to expand,” Cale said without preamble, as if completely unfazed by Lydia’s lingering gaze.
The rest of the conversation revolved entirely around business. Whether it was intentional-to put her at ease or not-Lydia ouldn’t deny that part of her felt relieved.
At least Cale wasn’t talking about Naomi with Liu anymore.
Eventually, Lydia chose to head into the bedroom first. She slipped off her shoes and let herself sink into the sofa for a moment before finally deciding to shower.
Warm water streamed over her body, slowly easing the exhaustion from the day-the park, the shopping, the museum, Naomi. and her conversation with Cale.
Everything blended together.
And strangely… this time, Lydia didn’t feel the urge to run from any of it.
Instead, she felt a growing urge to uncover what Cale had chosen not to say.
When she stepped out of the bathroom, her hair still damp, her movements slowed the moment she noticed the shift in the room’s atmosphere. It was no longer quiet. No longer relaxed.
Cale was seated at the desk.
His laptop lay open in front of him, one hand holding his phone while another screen displayed rows of data that looked far too

serious. His expression had returned to something Lydia recognized well-focused, cold, completely immersed in work.
“…no, that’s not enough,” Cale’s voice came low but firm. “I need certainty, not possibilities. If they can’t keep up with our pace, then the collaboration ends, Liu. Brandon is an important client.”
Lydia paused, watching from a distance without intending to interrupt.
“If they can’t guarantee that, then this partnership won’t work,” he continued. His tone never rose, yet it carried enough weight to leave no room for negotiation. “That’s a loss for TnC. I don’t like losses.”
Lydia exhaled softly.
Another side of Cale-one she was beginning to understand increasingly. Not just a man who could tease her with quiet confidence or say things that stirred her heart-but someone who controlled.
