How to Train Your Ex-Billionaire novel Chapter 254

How much pain her father must have been in, knowing he wasn't that kind of person but unable to explain the truth to his own wife.

Winifred choked back a sob. "What happened after that?"

Mr. Thompson continued, "Your father planned to explain everything to your mother after the mission was over. But a year later, just as we were closing our dragnet on the traffickers, his cover was blown. During the escape, your father was shot."

Mr. Thompson's face was heavy with memory. "He didn't die instantly. We rushed him to the hospital. On the way, he grabbed my hand and asked me to do something for him."

"He said he probably wasn't going to make it. He told me he had a daughter, only seven years old. He loved her so much but wouldn't get to see her one last time. He made me promise not to tell you or your mother that he had died. He said there was some money in his account, and along with the department's death benefit, a portion should go to his parents for their retirement. The rest was to be sent to your mother's account every month as child support, until you came of age. Only after you turned eighteen were you to be told the truth. He thought by then, you'd be old enough to handle the grief."

By the time he finished, Winifred was weeping uncontrollably.

Her father had always been thinking of her, had always loved her. He hadn't abandoned her. He wasn't a cold, heartless man.

He was the best father in the world.

"Ms. Spencer, my deepest condolences," Mr. Thompson said.

Winifred couldn't stop crying, her words coming out in broken sobs. "Mr. Thompson, then why... why didn't my mother ever receive any of that child support? And why did no one tell me the truth after I turned eighteen?"

"What? Your mother never received the payments?" Mr. Thompson asked, shocked.

"No," Winifred said, wiping her tears. "My mother never mentioned anything."

Mr. Thompson frowned. "That's very strange. After your father passed, I personally delivered his ashes to your grandparents. I told them to tell you the truth when you came of age. And I explicitly instructed them to make the child support payments to you every month."

“On behalf of the department, I gave them Joseph's savings and the full death benefit. I relayed Joseph's last wishes and stressed the importance of the monthly payments for you. They promised me they would do it.”
