Winifred was overcome with grief.
Yvan knelt beside her and pulled her into his arms.
"Don't cry anymore. Dad will be sad if he sees you like this," Yvan comforted her.
Winifred was so distraught that she didn't even notice he had said 'Dad' instead of 'your dad.'
Darkness began to fall, but Winifred remained kneeling before the grave, unwilling to leave.
Worried her knees would start to hurt and unable to bear her continued sadness, Yvan turned to the tombstone. He gave a solemn nod and spoke respectfully. "Dad, my name is Yvan. I'm Winifred's boyfriend. Take a good look. What do you think of your future son-in-law?"
Winifred, lost in her sorrow, was startled by his antics. "Yvan, what are you doing?"
"I'm introducing myself to Dad," Yvan replied with a straight face, turning back to the grave. "Dad, let me tell you a bit more about myself. I'm twenty-eight, I have my own company, and I'm pretty successful. Winifred will never have to worry about a thing with me. You can rest easy. I'll take care of her for the rest of her life. And please, could you tell her to stop crying? It's breaking my heart to see her like this."
Hearing this, Winifred felt a strange mix of being deeply touched and wanting to laugh.
"Yvan, you're so shameless. We're not even married, and you're already calling him Dad."
"I'm sure he's happy to hear it," Yvan said. "I bet Dad really likes me."
Torn between tears and laughter, Winifred gave Yvan a light punch.
"See? Dad's spirit must be here. He finally made you smile," Yvan said earnestly.
Winifred looked at the tombstone, a fresh wave of emotion stinging her nose. If only her father were still alive to see her get married and have children.
Yvan quickly hugged her. "Don't cry. You'll make Dad sad again."
Wiping her tears, Winifred said, "Okay, I won't cry anymore."
"Then let's go back. It's completely dark now," Yvan said. "If you miss him, we can come back and visit often."
Winifred nodded, but when she tried to stand, she realized her legs had gone completely numb from kneeling.
She collapsed back onto the ground with a pained expression.
"Legs asleep?" Yvan asked, crouching down beside her.
"Mhm, I can't feel them at all," Winifred said with a grimace.
