She seemed to be on a phone call.
While Lyra was intrigued, she had no real desire to eavesdrop on someone else's drama.
But just as she took a step toward the exit, a deep male voice echoed from the hallway.
"As it stands, I'm highly satisfied with Maxwell's proposal, and I'm very interested in investing. However, let me be perfectly clear. I don't gamble on uncertainties. Before I sign anything, I need a rock-solid guarantee that I'll see a return on my investment within six months. Only then will I inject the second round of capital and finalize the equity transfer."
The man sounded to be in his thirties, his tone dripping with corporate authority.
Maxwell's proposal.
Investing.
Hearing those two explosive keywords in the same sentence, Lyra instantly connected the dots.
No wonder Maxwell had the nerve to walk away from the Sterling empire; he had already secured his safety net.
He and Aria truly were a match made in hell.
"Understood, thank you so much for your trust! Just one more thing... I'd like to ask a personal favor. Regarding our shared history abroad, could you please keep that a secret from him?"
The cautious, almost pleading edge in her voice was impossible to miss.
Lyra sighed silently, suddenly regretting her trip to the restroom.
She really should have just walked away when she had the chance.
The two people outside were still talking, and though they kept their voices down, the acoustics of the hallway made every word crystal clear.
"Abroad? Did something happen between us?"
"No, of course not."
"In that case, I'll be heading back to the table. I still need to iron out a few long-term expansion details with Mr. Sterling."
"You go ahead, I'll join you guys in a minute."
