Aria wanted to urge him to reconsider, but Maxwell cut her off with a sharp gesture.
"I've made my decision."
He needed this opportunity.
And he needed it desperately enough that hesitation wasn't an option.
Nathaniel didn't look the least bit surprised. The faint, predatory smile on his lips didn't change by a single fraction.
"Then here's to a lucrative partnership."
He stood up, extending his hand toward the two of them.
Maxwell stood immediately, firmly shaking Nathaniel's hand.
From that moment on, the heavy chains of a high-stakes alliance bound them together.
Meanwhile.
Back in Silverdale.
At the Lennox Estate.
Eleanor sat on the sofa, beaming at the young woman across from her.
"It's been so long, Cecilia. You've grown into such a stunning woman."
Beside the girl sat an impeccably dressed woman who bore a striking resemblance to her.
Mrs. Chambers smiled warmly. "I ran into your son a while back. He's turned into quite a handsome young man himself."
Eleanor waved her hand dismissively. "We've known each other for years, there's no need for flattery. But I'll say this—if Cecilia ever married into our family, it would be the Lennox family's absolute honor."
Cecilia blushed at the compliment, ducking her head shyly. "Things like that depend entirely on whether there's a connection between the two people."
Mrs. Chambers glanced toward the staircase, looking a bit puzzled. "Where is Miles anyway?"
"He's at the base. I called him this morning, so he should be on his way. He'll be here any minute."
Speak of the devil.
