Eleanor couldn't quite decipher Miles's true intentions.
But she remembered the bright, genuine smile on Cecilia's face when she came upstairs to get her mother. They must have hit it off to some degree.
And then her mind flashed back to what Lyra had casually mentioned a few days ago.
Maybe Miles really had moved on.
Maybe she had just been overly paranoid.
"Fine." Eleanor sighed softly. "I've done all I can. How you feel and whether the two of you actually end up together is entirely up to fate now."
Miles gave a faint hum of agreement before adding, "I rushed back here from the base, and I still have some unfinished paperwork. I'm going upstairs."
"Go on, then."
As Miles headed up the stairs, Eleanor remained on the sofa, lost in deep thought.
Meanwhile.
In the back of the Chambers family car.
Mrs. Chambers took her daughter's hand, looking at her with thinly veiled concern.
"Cecilia, tell me the truth. Does he actually like you?"
Cecilia smiled brightly. "Mom, we literally just reconnected today. Isn't it a little too early to talk about love? Besides, don't you have faith in your daughter's charm? Even if he doesn't like me right now, I'm fully capable of making him fall for me later."
"But..."
Mrs. Chambers was still worried.
Cecilia was her precious daughter, spoiled and protected her entire life. She wanted nothing but the absolute best for her and couldn't bear the thought of her being mistreated or heartbroken.
