On such a momentous day, she suddenly felt like having a drink, but she couldn't help recalling what had happened that particular night. Shaking off the thought, she opened her chat with Miles Lennox and sent him a text.
[Miles, didn't you buy a villa in the suburbs recently?]
Drinking at a private home was always safer, and she wouldn't have to worry about anyone plotting against her.
Miles replied quickly.
[Yeah, why?]
[Nothing much. Tomorrow is the weekend, and I want to hang out with my best friend.]
After she sent the message, it felt like a stone dropping into the ocean. Miles didn't reply for a long time.
Just as Lyra thought he was going to turn her down, his response finally came through.
[I'll have someone drop the keys off at your office.]
Lyra breathed a sigh of relief and replied with a sense of gratitude.
[I totally thought you were going to reject me.]
After all, the last time she had gotten blackout drunk, Miles had been right there beside her, witnessing all of her embarrassing antics.
Miles sent back a voice memo.
Lyra instinctively tapped to play it.
"I won't ever reject you." After a three-second pause, he added, "Ever."
He would never reject her.
Miles's voice was deep, and compressed through the phone's speaker, it carried an even more magnetic pull.
Lyra's heart skipped a beat, though she remained completely oblivious to it. She just laughed and sent a voice memo back to tease him.
"Don't make promises like that so early. What if your future wife gets jealous?"
Right after she sent the message, Quincy Sawyer knocked and walked into the office.
