I Chose Me Over My Marriage novel Chapter 140

Miles's gentle reassurance eased the panic tight in Lyra's chest.

Her eyes darted to the shattered porcelain on the floor, and she muttered apologetically, "It's a shame about the vase."

Miles followed her gaze, glanced briefly at the shattered pieces, and immediately looked back at her.

"It doesn't matter. As long as you aren't hurt, nothing else is important."

As he spoke, he crouched down, reaching out to check her legs for any cuts or scrapes.

The moment she realized what he was doing, Lyra flinched and pulled her legs away.

Miles froze, looking up at her, catching the deep flush spreading across her cheeks.

Perhaps a beat too late, Miles finally recognized the sheer inappropriateness of his actions, and the sudden realization that this kind of intimacy had almost become second nature to him.

The air between them abruptly thickened with an undeniable, awkward tension.

Lyra was the first to break it, practically springing to her feet.

"Miles, I'm fine. It's really late, I should get back to sleep."

Leaving those words hanging in the air, she practically bolted from the room.

Back in the guest room next door, Lyra found it impossible to fall asleep.

Her mind kept looping back to the ridiculous, absurd dream she'd had earlier.

After tossing and turning for what felt like hours with absolutely zero success, she finally gave up and sat up.

She sighed heavily and dragged herself out of the bedroom.

But just as she reached the top of the stairs, she bumped right into Miles coming out of his room.

"Uh..." Lyra offered a nervous smile. "I couldn't sleep."

"Me neither."

Miles lifted the two glasses of liquor he was holding.

"Want a drink?"
