Lyra sprang to her feet, stumbling a step backward.
"No, this absolutely cannot happen between us."
Seeing her about to trip over the coffee table, Miles abandoned all restraint and surged forward to catch her.
In a chaotic blur, Lyra found herself scooped up into his arms.
His searing body heat radiated against her, burning her skin.
Instinctively, she shrank back, desperate to put distance between them.
Miles noted her reaction, a flash of something unreadable crossing his eyes.
A second later, he set her down gently.
"Careful."
Lyra seemed to realize her reaction had been too extreme, and the alcohol buzzing in her head was quickly fading.
She took a deep breath and forced a smile. "I know, Miles. It's getting late, so I'm going to bed."
With that, she turned and headed upstairs.
Miles stood rooted to the spot, watching her disappear up the staircase as a faint smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth.
He could clearly feel that the atmosphere between them had irrevocably shifted.
Sitting back on the living room sofa, Miles gently swirled the liquor in his glass, his smile deepening.
The next morning.
Lyra woke up early, got ready, and left the villa.
As she walked out, Miles was standing on the upper landing, watching her retreating figure until she completely disappeared from his line of sight.
Then, he pulled out his phone and dialed his most recent contact.
It rang for a moment before someone answered.
