Harrison and Eleanor were left standing in the hallway, watching Lyra and Miles leave one after the other. Their faces were etched with helplessness, but mostly, profound worry.
Meanwhile.
Lyra walked all the way out of the villa estate. She was so lost in thought that she hadn't even realized she was still holding the box she had originally meant to throw away.
She had simply gone out to take out the trash, but as she passed Miles's bedroom, she overheard Harrison's words.
Miles liked her.
In the past, there had been plenty of malicious gossip suggesting that as an adopted son, Miles would eventually harbor ulterior motives.
Lyra had never believed a single word of it.
Even when Maxwell had thrown those accusations in her face, she had found them utterly absurd.
But now, the reality was unrolling right in front of her. She couldn't deny it even if she wanted to.
The most shocking part was that Harrison had known all along.
Lyra looked down at the box in her arms, let out a soft sigh, and tossed it into a nearby trash can. She walked to the curb and raised a hand, trying to hail a passing cab.
None of the taxis stopped, but a black Jeep pulled up directly in front of her.
She instantly recognized it as Miles's car.
She still hadn't fully processed what had just happened. She didn't want to face him, and she had absolutely no idea how to.
The window rolled down, revealing Miles's face.
"Get in. I'll drop you off."
He paused for a beat before adding, "And we can talk on the way."
Lyra's first instinct was to refuse, but under the dim streetlights, she could clearly see how piercingly bright his eyes were.
With a heavy sigh, she ultimately chose to get in.
She shut the door and buckled her seatbelt as Miles put the car in gear.
