Seeing that Miles wasn't about to let Maxwell off easily, Lyra said softly, "Miles, I'm tired. Let's just go inside."
When Miles turned his gaze to Lyra, the hard lines of his face softened into a rare gentleness.
But a second later, Maxwell scrambled up from the pavement and desperately grabbed the hem of Miles' pants.
"You like her, don't you? But don't forget, she's nothing but used goods. I've already had my fun with her."
As soon as the words left his mouth, Lyra could feel Miles' grip on her hand tighten aggressively.
Such a vile insult would humiliate anyone.
Let alone Lyra.
"Lyra, don't tell me you really can't see it. He likes you. The man you've always looked up to like a brother actually wants you in the most despicable way. What right do you have to judge me?"
Smack—
Lyra was still momentarily frozen by Maxwell's toxic words. By the time the sound snapped her back to reality, Miles had Maxwell by the collar, landing heavy, brutal punches straight to his face.
At the same time, the estate's security team rushed over.
Taking in the chaotic scene, they hesitated, unsure if they should break up the fight or help Miles.
It was Lyra who snapped them into action. "What are you standing around for? Stop him!"
The guards swarmed forward, finally managing to pull Miles away.
Lyra marched right up to Maxwell. The moment he staggered to his feet, she slapped him across the face with everything she had.
The sharp crack echoed through the air.
Loud and crisp.
