"How is that even possible?" Lyra scowled fiercely. "I trust my instincts implicitly. Something is fundamentally wrong here. Whatever, I'm literally about to board my flight. We will discuss this the second I land."
She hung up and marched toward the boarding gate.
Just as she reached the front of the line, her phone erupted again.
It was an unknown number.
She answered it, and a deeply familiar voice came through the speaker.
"Lyra."
It was Miles.
Lyra's eyes instantly lit up.
"Miles, are you okay?"
"I'm fine. You don't need to worry," Miles said, his tone incredibly composed. "Trust me, whatever gets thrown my way, I can handle it."
His unshakable confidence was as reassuring as ever.
Yet, Lyra couldn't shake the creeping dread.
Sensing her hesitation, Miles expertly cut off her impending interrogation.
"One month. Give me one month, and I will come back for you. Since we were kids, I have never lied to you. That hasn't changed, and it never will."
His voice was a deep, resonant anchor, leaving Lyra frozen in the boarding line, entirely unsure if she should step onto the plane.
He was right. He had never once lied to her.
Lyra let out a defeated sigh. "And if you break that promise?"
