"What did you do?"
Lyra glared at Maxwell, her eyes piercingly cold.
A sickening smirk crept onto Maxwell's lips, making him look entirely unhinged.
"If you want to know what I did to him, let's go find a café and have a proper chat."
"What makes you think I'd believe a word you say?"
Lyra's face was full of mockery.
"You have zero credibility with me."
With that, she glanced at Courtney, signaling with her eyes to ignore him and just walk away.
Courtney knew how much Lyra loathed Maxwell, so she prepared to leave with her.
But before they could take two steps, Maxwell spoke up again from behind.
"Then you probably don't know how severely injured he was. You missed the call he made to you, didn't you?"
In an instant, Lyra's entire body went rigid.
That missed call... If Maxwell hadn't been right there when it happened, how could he possibly know about it?
Lyra clenched her fists, taking a deep breath to forcefully steady her turbulent emotions. She turned to Courtney and forced a smile. "You head back first. I remember you saying you had family matters to attend to and needed to rush back to Metropolis. You should go pack your things."
"But..." Courtney's eyes were filled with worry.
She wasn't comfortable leaving Lyra alone with Maxwell.
Maxwell timed his words perfectly. "It's broad daylight. Do you really think I'd try anything?"
He made a fair point, which left Courtney torn.
Seeing this, Lyra quickly reassured her, "Don't worry. He wouldn't dare."
Only then did Courtney leave with peace of mind.
Lyra then turned back to Maxwell, the gentle expression she had shown Courtney vanishing, replaced by sheer, unfiltered impatience.
"You better not be lying to me."
Maxwell shrugged helplessly. "I have no reason to lie to you. You should know better than anyone how much I despise talking about that man."
