Lyra looked into Miles's eyes, fully aware of what he was thinking and what he feared.
But she didn't want to stay, and she absolutely couldn't.
Whatever lay between them was fundamentally impossible.
She knew exactly what Harrison and Eleanor were thinking.
They had already suffered enough heartbreak over her marriage.
If she and Miles got together, it would only deal them another devastating blow.
"Miles, I never got to tell you how I truly feel."
Lyra clenched her fists, doing her best to maintain a serene expression as she looked at him.
"No matter what happens, I will only ever see you as my brother. That's what you were, and that's what you'll always be."
Miles stiffened, staring at her in sheer disbelief.
It wasn't that her words shocked him.
He had anticipated this moment a long time ago.
They had lived as siblings for so many years.
Even if Lyra's feelings had shifted recently, the massive weight of their history couldn't be erased overnight.
"I know the environment you're in now is different, and the pressure is enormous, so I'm not going to force anything on you. Things are fine the way they are. I've recovered enough, so I'll be going now."
With that, Lyra walked out without looking back.
Miles wanted to chase after her, but he couldn't find the courage.
Only when Lyra completely vanished from his sight did he snap out of his daze. He pulled out his phone and made a call.
It connected almost instantly.
"Keep your men on her. Protect her at all costs. If anything happens to her again, you're all fired."
After dropping that order, Miles hung up.
Meanwhile, Lyra had already stepped out of the villa.
