The knock sounded again. Miles rubbed his aching temples, stood up, and opened the door.
A man standing outside handed him a document.
Miles took it, glanced at it, and frowned deeply.
"Alright, I got it. You can head back now."
But the man didn't leave immediately as instructed. He opened his mouth a few times, hesitating, as if he had something crucial to say but couldn't get the words out.
Seeing this, Miles's voice turned icy. "Are you ignoring my orders now? Remember your place. Know what you should and shouldn't do, and keep your nose out of things that don't concern you."
Hearing this, the man didn't dare say another word and turned to leave.
Lyra lay in bed, silently watching the exchange.
She recognized the man at the door.
He was the Gardners' Chief Assistant, Jace York.
He had always accompanied Ezekiel Gardner to public events, so Lyra was familiar with him.
As for what they were discussing, she had no interest whatsoever.
She pushed herself up, leaning heavily against the wall. Her body still felt entirely drained, especially her legs.
If she hadn't braced herself, she would have collapsed to her knees from the weakness.
She made her way to the bathroom and stared at her pale, fragile reflection in the mirror.
Anyone could see just how exhausted she looked.
Lyra splashed water on her face, finally managing to look a bit more awake.
When she stood up straight, she noticed Miles had been standing in the doorway for God knew how long.
