Maxwell acted completely oblivious, flashing a sickening smile. "You got a tip back then and tried to intercept him, and look how that turned out. He waltzed right back into the Gardner Family without a scratch, turning into your biggest nightmare."
"Shut up!" Preston roared, swinging his fist square into Maxwell's jaw.
The punch carried so much force that it knocked one of Maxwell's teeth loose.
Maxwell casually spat out the blood, turned back to Preston, and sneered, "Did I say something wrong? Preston, from the second you dragged me into this, you should have known there was no shaking me."
As he spoke, he suddenly burst into a fit of unhinged laughter, looking so deranged it made the hairs on the back of Preston's neck stand up.
Realizing just how far gone Maxwell was, Preston took a step back, as if afraid he might catch a disease.
"You'd better pray you don't screw up my plans. Because right now, I might not be able to touch Miles, but crushing you would take zero effort."
Dropping that threat, he turned and marched toward the door.
Behind him, Maxwell stared at his retreating back.
"You're wrong. You won't crush anyone. The only person you're destroying is yourself."
As the words left his mouth, Maxwell wiped the blood from the corner of his lips.
"I'm not letting this go. Never."
The burning determination in his eyes was like a raging wildfire, ready to consume everything in its path until nothing was left but ash.
Preston hesitated for a split second before storming out.
The moment the door clicked shut, Maxwell collapsed back onto the bed.
It took him a long while to gather his bearings before he pulled out his phone and dialed Nathaniel Jude.
As soon as the line connected, he said darkly, "I'll take the deal we talked about."
On the other end, Nathaniel paused in surprise before swallowing his amusement.
"Done."
Hanging up, Nathaniel glanced over at his assistant.
