Hearing the footsteps recede, Mrs. Sterling Sr. turned to watch Maxwell walk away, shaking her head with a heavy, exhausted sigh.
Her explosion earlier had been entirely fueled by blind rage.
But right now, her only option was to force Maxwell into a corner.
A sudden thought crossed her mind. She stood up and marched upstairs to her bedroom, immediately unlocking her safe to retrieve a heavily sealed document.
She stared at it for an agonizingly long time before finally steeling her resolve and pulling it out.
"There's absolutely no other way out of this."
She muttered to herself, the words serving as a desperate reinforcement of her own decision.
Evening.
The golden hues of dusk slowly bled out of the sky.
Lyra had been completely dead to the world all afternoon, only waking up when a gentle knock echoed against her door.
"Lyra, time to get up for dinner."
It was Eleanor's voice.
Lyra slowly pushed herself up, rubbing her sleepy eyes, and murmured a sluggish response.
After taking a minute to shake off the grogginess, she slid out of bed and made her way downstairs.
In the dining room, Harrison and Eleanor's faces immediately lit up with bright smiles when they saw her.
"You're a grown woman, how do you manage to sleep the entire day away?"
Lyra smiled, pulling out a chair. Picking up her silverware, she casually asked, "Where's Miles? Why isn't he eating with us?"
"He went back to base. Said something came up, so he won't be around for a couple of days."
Harrison's tone was entirely casual and flat.
But Lyra couldn't shake the creeping suspicion that ever since she came home, her parents' attitude toward Miles had been incredibly strange.
Even though Miles was adopted, she distinctly remembered her parents treating him exactly like their own flesh and blood. It wasn't until middle school, when a blood test revealed her blood type didn't match his, and she subsequently learned her parents' blood types, that she discovered they weren't biologically related.
