When Lyra arrived home, the house was quiet. Seeing no one around, she was just about to head upstairs to grab the first-aid kit when she nearly collided with Miles coming down the stairs.
The second their eyes met, Lyra guiltily let out a small hiccup.
Just as she expected, Miles's brows instantly pulled together in a dark scowl.
"What happened to you?"
He didn't wait for an answer, descending the rest of the stairs in three massive strides.
Stopping directly in front of her, he reached out to brush her hair back to inspect the wound, but she instinctively ducked away.
"It's nothing. Just a little accident."
Even her own voice sounded unconvincing.
Miles stared down at her, his frown deepening into something dangerous.
"Lyra, there are ten thousand ways for me to find out exactly what happened. Are you really going to make me do that, or are you going to tell me the truth?"
The quiet threat laced in his words left Lyra completely speechless.
Seeing her stubborn silence, the icy edge in his eyes melted into quiet exasperation.
"You can explain everything later. Let's get that cleaned up first."
That was the priority.
Lyra let out a soft "Mhm," automatically handing the first-aid kit over to him when he reached for it.
Up in her bedroom.
Lyra sat perfectly still on the edge of the sofa while Miles leaned over her. He carefully wiped away the dried blood before meticulously disinfecting the cut. Luckily, the gash wasn't too deep. A single bandage easily covered the damage.
Once he was satisfied, Miles finally sat back.
"Alright. Start talking."
Lyra opened her mouth to deflect, but gave up with a heavy sigh and recounted the entire insane ambush at the office.
Just as she predicted, Miles's expression turned murderous.
