I Chose Me Over My Marriage novel Chapter 86

She had honestly thought Maxwell was just lashing out like a cornered animal, but this was a meticulously engineered trap.

She clenched her fists, taking a deep, shuddering breath. The burning rage in her chest had nowhere to go, leaving her feeling utterly suffocated.

"I think I know exactly what I need to do."

Some things could only put the public's doubts to rest if they came straight from the source's mouth.

On the other end of the line, a faint, proud smile touched Miles's lips.

He knew that with just a slight nudge in the right direction, Lyra would instantly figure out the perfect counterattack.

But dealing with a snake like Maxwell meant they couldn't afford to leave her unprotected.

"When you go see him, tell me. I'll have a security team tail you from the shadows. Remember, whatever happens, this family is your impenetrable fortress. Especially me. Stop rejecting our help, Lyra."

Lyra wasn't sure if she was imagining things, but the way he softly called her name at the end felt incredibly tender.

She let out a heavy sigh. "Miles, sometimes I really wonder what kind of woman my future sister-in-law is going to be, and how you're going to treat her. Everyone out there thinks you're this ruthless, cold-blooded machine, but they don't know you at all. I bet you're going to spoil your wife rotten."

Speaking of marriage, Lyra suddenly remembered the conversation Eleanor had started at the dinner table.

"By the way, did you end up meeting that Chen girl Mom mentioned? How did it go? Did she catch your eye?"

Separated by the phone screen, Lyra couldn't see Miles's face.

Nor could she see the way his expression instantly froze over.

When he finally answered, his tone was perfectly casual, as if the entire topic bored him to death.
