I Chose Me Over My Marriage novel Chapter 90

"Did you really think a pathetic, underhanded trick like this would force me to stay? Don't even dream about it, Maxwell. I will never, ever give you the chance to use me again. You think a few fabricated rumors online are enough to trap me in this nightmare?"

"Keep dreaming."

With that, Lyra picked up the porcelain teacup and hurled it violently at the floor, shattering it into pieces.

"Our relationship is exactly like this cup. It is completely, irreparably destroyed. You don't love me, so why on earth would I love you? What an absolute joke."

Without a second glance, Lyra turned on her heel and strode toward the door.

Maxwell stood frozen in shock. By the time his brain finally processed what was happening, Lyra was already at the door handle.

"Lyra!"

She stopped, her hand hovering over the doorknob.

Behind her, Maxwell's voice shook with desperate fury.

"You're a woman in high society! A scandal like this will ruin you! You might not care, but are you really going to drag the entire Lennox family through a media circus again because of your selfishness? Is this how you repay your parents?!"

In that moment, Lyra had to give him credit.

Maxwell might not love her, but he knew exactly how to stab her where it hurt the most.

"I made a terrible mistake marrying you, and I own that. But that doesn't mean I have to spend the rest of my life rotting in the shadow of that mistake. Furthermore..."

Lyra let out a soft, liberated laugh.

"If my own parents don't hold this against me, what gives you the right to constantly use it as a weapon?"

Wasn't this just another textbook gaslighting tactic?

"You parade around Metropolis acting like some self-made genius, but the truth is, you crawled your way to the top by bleeding your wife's family dry. Without me, what exactly are you? Nothing."

Leaving that devastating truth hanging in the air, Lyra pulled the door open and walked out.

She didn't look back, and she would never stop for him again.

Maxwell stood entirely paralyzed in the center of the office. The absolute, unshakeable finality in Lyra's voice echoed in his skull.

In that horrifying moment, the brutal reality finally set in.
