Chapter 130
Marcus’s brows drew together, displeasure flickering,
She ignored it.
“That man said his backer was someone in the Morgan Group. Has upper management been… restless lately?”
Marcus let out a short, cold laugh.
“You think the board would stoop to something that childish?”
Sophie pressed her lips together. True–such clumsy tactics didn’t fit.
“It was Liam,” Marcus said flatly.
“He wasn’t striking at the Group.”
Sophie’s eyes widened.
“…He was striking at me?”
Marcus didn’t waste more words.
“The culprit’s clear. Now–back to what matters.”
He suddenly leaned in, his arm braced on the car door, caging her in with the weight of his presence.
“That phone call. What was it about?”
Sophie’s breath hitched, his face only inches away.
Marcus’s hand brushed her cheek, his tone slow, deliberate.
“Your face is burning.”
“Could you not… stand so close when we’re talking business?” she murmured, flustered.
One brow arched.
“Your mouth can lie. Your eyes can’t.”
“When I’m looking into your eyes, I know if you’re telling me the truth.”
Something about his tone struck her–it almost sounded… wounded.
And when she thought about it, she had lied to him more than once.
The man who was a demon in everyone else’s eyes had let her deceive him again and again.
Maybe… some answers didn’t matter anymore.
Sophie lifted her gaze, meeting his head–on.
“And you? If I look into your eyes–would you ever lie to me?”
“Never,” Marcus answered without a beat of hesitation.
Her chest tightened.
“Marcus… do you hate me?”
His brows pulled together.

Chapter 130
“Why would you think that?”
“Just answer. Yes or no.”
His voice was low, but utterly serious.
“Sophie… have you ever known someone who could love and hate a person at the same time?”
Her blood froze. For a moment, she forgot how to breathe.
Did his words mean what she thought they did?
She had always suspected. But hearing it–seeing it–in front of her made her afraid to reach for it.
“Mr. Morgan, the man confessed-”
Chris’s voice cut in, then died instantly when he saw inside the car. He spun on his heel and fled.
Shit. Did I just ruin the boss’s moment?
Flushed crimson, Sophie shoved Marcus back.
“You should handle business first.”
She pushed the door open and hurried out, avoiding Chris’s eyes as she fled even faster.
