Chapter 143
“You’re too softhearted. If it were me, I’d have sent him straight to hell already!”
Sherry Shaw had spent years abroad calling herself a hacker, but Sophie had always suspected her friend was into far more than just hacking. Sophie didn’t want Sherry dragging dangerous forces into the open on her account.
“Alright, let me toy with him a bit first. If I can’t win, then I’ll ask for your help.”
She deftly changed the subject. “So, why exactly are you back this time?”
Sherry rolled her eyes. “All thanks to that illegitimate brat, Nina. Heard she got fired from Morgan Group a while ago I was so thrilled I almost popped champagne. But then, guess what? A few days ago, she got rehired. Not only that–she got promoted!”
“Apparently she’s now some director’s assistant. My dad and the old man were full of praise, going on about how capable she is, saying she puts me, their actual daughter, to shame.”
“My mom was terrified I’d lose out when it came time to split the inheritance, so she threw a fit and forced me to come back.”
Sophie frowned. “Director’s assistant? That doesn’t make sense.”
She had known Nina’s identity from the first moment they met. The girl was the child of Mr. Shaw and his mistress, hidden away until Sherry’s mother discovered her when Sherry was five. Mrs. Shaw had tried to drive the woman off, but a car accident killed the mistress instead. Four–year–old Nina barely survived.
Mr. Shaw, furious at his wife’s cruelty, ignored the family’s protests and brought the child home.
And somehow, Nina had wormed her way into the family’s good graces. From being unwanted, she’d turned herself into their darling. Compared to Sherry, the Shaw family clearly favored the illegitimate daughter.
I agree it’s strange,” Sophie said. “Getting rehired at Morgan Group isn’t easy, let alone jumping from intern to director’s assistant in under a year. Their promotion standards are strict–it usually takes top graduates three to five years to reach assistant level. Nina hasn’t even graduated
yet.”
“There’s definitely something shady here.”
Sherry’s tone was firm. “I don’t care if she tries to fight me for the inheritance. She doesn’t have what it takes. But you’re working at Morgan Group now, and I don’t want her targeting you. That’s why I rushed back.”
Sophie’s chest warmed. “Don’t worry. I’ve dealt with Nina before. She’s not very sharp. Even if she tries something, she won’t be able to hurt
me.”
“She’d better not. Or I’ll make her regret it.”
Just then, Sherry’s phone buzzed with a special alert.
Sophie raised a brow. “Special tone? Come on, who else besides me do you give a special alert?”
Sherry quickly unlocked her phone and showed the screen.
“Look–just a gaming buddy. Good player. I didn’t want to miss his challenges, so I set the tone.”
Sophie glanced at their chat log–nothing but game talk. The last message was a furious emoji followed by a line:
‘In a bad mood today. Feel like killing someone. Log on!‘

Chapter 143
Sophie pushed the phone back. “Looks like your buddy needs you right now.”
Sherry scanned the message, frowned, then gave Sophie an apologetic look
Before she could speak, Sophie cut in with a teasing pout.
“Alright, alright, I get it. You’re ditching me for your gamer friend. It’s fine, I’ll survive, Go keep him company”
Sherry’s heart melted at once. “Games aren’t more important than you. No matter what, I’m staying with you today.”
Sophie laughed into her hand before turning serious.
“I’m fine, really. Go play your game. I need to stop by the office anyway and check on Nina. With the Spring Collection launch a success, a lot of eyes are on the design department. Now that she’s wormed her way in, I’m worried she’ll ruin our hard work.”
“Alright. Go see what tricks she’s up to. If anything happens, call me right away.”
“Will do.”
After parting ways, Sophie headed to the company.
The moment she stepped inside, the design department was abuzz.
“Word is the new director’s about to arrive. Dropping in at a time like this, he’s gotta be some bigwig’s relative!”
“Convenient timing too. Didn’t show up when we were breaking our backs for the Spring Collection, but now that it’s a success, here he is to
take credit!”
“Shh! Don’t let him hear you. You’ll get yourself–and the whole department–in trouble.”
As they whispered, Nina strolled in wearing a mint–green business suit, pencil skirt, and eight–centimeter heels. She looked every bit the
assistant she claimed to be.
Everyone’s eyes shifted from Sophie to the girl following her.
“Manager Chandler, long time no see,” Nina said, chin tilted proudly.
“Oh, and you probably haven’t heard yet I’m now the new director’s assistant. We’ll be working together a lot, so I hope you won’t make things
difficult for me.”
Her smug, mocking tone darkened the faces of the entire design team. They all knew how she’d been fired. And now she was back, flaunting her position? Clearly she wouldn’t rest until she made their lives hell.
“Last time, you went down for backing the wrong side. Let’s hope you’ve learned. Survive longer this time.”
