Sophie’s words were blunt.
“Tll handle the land transfer. I’ll find a way to figure out what’s really going on.”
“And how exactly do you plan to do that?” Ethan Chandler’s brow furrowed, his voice unusually stern.
“The moment I learned about it, I sent an invitation asking to meet him, but Chris turned me down,” Ethan continued. “Clearly, Marcus isn’t planning to tell us much. That man always operates in ways no one can predict. Who knows what kind of poisoned candy is hidden beneath that ‘gift‘ of land.”
Hearing this, Sophie felt her stomach twist. It wasn’t that she feared Marcus was digging a trap for her–quite the opposite. A gnawing sense of unease had already taken root in her chest.
Marcus was injured. Liam had suddenly returned to the company with fanfare. And now Marcus had transferred the entire West River property to her family in such a domineering gesture–only to vanish right after.
It felt less like generosity and more like a man bracing for something dangerous, tossing her a distraction before he disappeared.
Sophie’s eyes filled with worry. As she headed upstairs, she called back over her shoulder,
“Dad, Mom, Ethan, don’t worry. Marcus would never harm us. Let me try reaching him first.”
She hurried into her room, closed the door, and immediately dialed Marcus’s number.
The phone rang and rang until it cut off automatically.
She tried Chris next, again and again–but every call went unanswered.
Her unease only grew sharper. Marcus was planning something big–she could feel it.
For the next few days Sophie exhausted every method she could think of to contact him, but his phone never connected.
She even considered storming the Morgan Group offices to confront him, only to be told Marcus had flown abroad for contract negotiations. He
wasn’t even in Riverland.
And before leaving, he had given strict orders: since Sophie and her team were already on leave, they were not to step foot back into the Morgan Group until their vacation ended.
It was like he was deliberately cutting her off from the chaos. Yet the more he hid, the more anxious Sophie became.
Three days later, the university anniversary arrived. Sophie steadied her emotions and made her way to Riverland University.
Whatever Marcus was planning, life had to go on. She would not put her own world on pause for him.
The moment she stepped out of the car, she spotted Mr. Harris at the gate.
Despite his age, his scholar’s poise hadn’t dimmed; if anything, time had only deepened the gravity and warmth in his demeanor.
Sophie smiled as she approached.
“Principal, why are you waiting out here just for me? Isn’t that a little too indulgent?”
Mr. Harris chuckled softly. “You think too highly of yourself. The Morgan Group donated an arts building recently. They’re sending

representatives today. I’m here to welcome them.”
“So I was overthinking It.” Sophie pouted playfully,
His eyes softened with affection. “I thought all those years by Liam’s side would’ve worn down your spirit. But I see you’re still the same gui who liked to pout. That sets my mind at ease.”
“Don’t worry, Principal. A scumbag like Liam isn’t enough to change who I am.”
Her words had barely landed when an all–too–familiar, grating voice came from behind.
“Sophie, you’re here too? Back for the anniversary?”
Liam wheeled himself forward, Nina strutting beside him with her usual air of arrogance,
The smile froze on Sophie’s face. She turned quickly to Mr. Harris.
“I’ll head inside first, Principal. You should focus on the important guests.”
Without sparing Liam a glance, she walked away.
From the instant Liam appeared, Mr. Harris’s respect evaporated. He never would’ve guessed the Morgan Group’s representative would be
Liam.
“Director Morgan,” Mr. Harris said with a thin smile, his words edged with steel, “still not recovered, yet you drag yourself here. That’s real
dedication.”
The sarcasm was hardly concealed.
Liam only offered a polite nod. “The company trusts me. Naturally, I’ll give it my all.”
Mr. Harris had no desire to linger with a man like him. After a few perfunctory remarks, he led Liam inside.
Riverland University wasn’t just the top school in the city–it carried weight nationwide, even worldwide. Each year it produced thousands of graduates, many of whom later filled national headlines.
This anniversary was particularly significant. It would be Mr. Harris’s last before retirement, and countless alumni returned to honor him.
The atmosphere buzzed with joy.
Boulevards lined with sycamores had been dressed in violet garlands, while animal–shaped garden sculptures stood lively and whimsical. Smiles shone on the faces of students and alumni alike.
Not long after Sophie entered, a cluster of old classmates approached.
“Sophie, it really is you! I wasn’t sure from a distance,” said Lisa, her former dorm mate, grinning brightly.
