Chapter 175
The smiles on everyone’s faces froze in an instant. Hands holding wine glasses trembled ever so slightly.
For the sake of appearances, no one would openly call out Sophie’s scandal, but what Nina had just said struck at the very fear lingering in their hearts.
A wealthy heiress suddenly pregnant by some unknown man–who knew if she carried some disease?
“Ugh, disgusting! I’m not eating in the same room as trash like Sophie.”
One rich girl tossed her glass straight into the trash bin.
The others followed suit, setting down their wine glasses and plates one after another. They said nothing, but their message was obvious.
“Sophie is a smart woman. I’m sure you understand what everyone means,” Nina said, pulling out a disinfectant wipe and scrubbing her hands where she had touched the glass.
“Everyone thinks you’re dirty. If this goes on, your father’s birthday banquet will be ruined. Why don’t you excuse yourself now, before it gets even more embarrassing?”
Sophie’s fingers tightened against the side of her dress, lips pressed into a thin line as she fought down her rage.
“Fine. Since you all want to eat and drink, enjoy yourselves. I won’t be staying.”
She turned to leave, only to feel her wrist caught in a firm grip.
Her father pulled her behind him, his broad shoulders shielding her from the venomous stares.
“Today is my birthday, a joyous day for the Chandler family. If you can’t accept my one and only daughter, then I won’t force any of you to remain.”
His voice rang out clear and steady. “You all have families. Tell me, if this happened at your daughter’s birthday banquet, would you stand by and let some outsider drive her away?”
As he spoke, his eyes flicked briefly over Nina. His tone might have been light, but the weight of his stare made Nina’s heart pound in panic.
“M–Mr. Chandler, you misunderstand, I wasn’t trying to target=”
“You call me Uncle Chandler?” he cut her off, voice cold. “As far as I know, the Shaw family only has one daughter–Sherry. Who exactly are you to address me that way?”
Nina’s face turned red and pale in turns. She had never imagined a man of Mr. Chandler’s stature would embarrass her so openly.
Sherry stepped forward and stood beside him, her posture calm but protective.
“My uncle’s right. Funny, I don’t recall the Shaw family having another daughter/How did you even get your hands on a Chandler invitation? Did you steal it?”
Her mocking tone made Nina’s eyes water.
“Sis, I…”
“Don’t you dare.” Sherry’s patience snapped. “My mother only gave birth to me. She never gave me some random sister. If you keep parading yourself as family, I can sue you for defamation.”
Nina’s lips trembled, her face drained of all color, as fragile as paper.

Chapter 175
Everyone in Riverland knew the Shaw family had just one daughter. Sherry had spent years abroad, while Nina mingled with the local socialites. Over time, people simply mistook her for the real heiress.
And Nina had relished the praise and deference. She’d never once corrected them.
Now, with Sherry back, that illusion was shattered. Everything Nina had stolen was gone.
“So it’s true–Nina’s really an illegitimate daughter? A journalist friend of mine mentioned it, but I thought it was just gossip.”
“No wonder she never looked like she did as a child. Turns out she’s been a fake all along.”
“The Shaws really let a bastard child run wild for years? Shameful!”
The crowd erupted into whispers.
Nina’s eyes blazed with panic. She jabbed a finger at Sherry.
“My father won’t let you get away with this!”
With that, she fled in tears.
Sherry stood her ground, calm on the surface though her hands trembled faintly.
Sophie’s heart ached watching her stand there, silently shielding her.
The Shaws had hidden the scandal of an illegitimate daughter for years, and now Sherry had exposed it in front of everyone. When she went home, her family would never forgive her.
Sophie tugged her hand, no words needed.
Sherry smiled and shrugged lightly. “She brought this on herself. I didn’t lie. The family won’t do anything to me.”
Just then, a loud male voice broke through the crowd.
“Where’s my son? Let me see how big my boy is now!”
A group of rough, heavyset men barged in, striding toward Sophie.
“Bullshit! That kid in her belly’s mine. I had her the most times that night. Of course it’s my seed!”
“No way, she was clinging to me the whole time, begging me not to stop. The baby’s mine!”
“Shut the hell up!” Sherry exploded, her voice sharp with fury.
The men’s eyes raked over her openly, their gazes greasy and vile.
Sophie yanked Sherry behind her, glaring coldly.
“Who the hell are you?”
“Don’t tell me you forgot? That night you were crying out Daddy with us. You didn’t seem so shy then.”
Her stomach churned. “I don’t know you. Leave now.”
