Chapter 189
Sophie’s eyes widened when she realized Marcus had only leaned in to snatch her phone.
A rush of shame and fury hit her all at once. She forgot to fight him for it, her head ducking like a sulking balloon ready to pop.
“Tsk, tsk. No wonder your face was so red just now–you were reading these.”
His voice carried amusement and something like satisfaction.
Her mind caught up a second later–those bold, teasing fan comments still plastered across her screen.
“Marcus!” she hissed, cheeks blazing. “Give me back my phone!”
“Relax. I’ll hand it back once I’m done.”
He scrolled leisurely, clearly entertained.
She snatched it back and crossed her arms, glaring. “Who said you could look through my phone?”
“Already mad?” His lips curved. “Not calling me Mr. Morgan anymore?”
The thought of her stiff, distant act before made this spark of temper feel oddly…intimate.
Sophie faltered, a flicker of something complicated in her eyes, then turned her face toward the window. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Marcus only watched her quietly for a moment before turning his gaze outside too. He understood–she still kept her guard up. If she trusted him completely, she wouldn’t have hidden Liora from him all this time.
The Maybach rolled to a stop outside an upscale restaurant. Sophie followed him in, surprised to find the place fully reserved. The staff bowed as they
entered.
“Mr. Morgan, Miss Chandler, please enjoy. Your meal will be served shortly.”
One by one, dishes arrived. Finally, the last plate came out–its contents concealed under an ornate silver cloche,
“What’s this? Why so mysterious?” Sophie asked.
“Open it,” Marcus said calmly, though his eyes held the faintest tension.
Curious, she lifted the lid.
Inside lay a sunflower–shaped brooch.
It looked strangely familiar, though she couldn’t place it. She picked it up, studying it, but nothing came.
Marcus read her face, then took the brooch back and slipped it into his pocket
“Forget it. When the time’s right, you’ll remember.”
“Is it important to you?”
His whole aura bristled with unease. “Not important,” he said flatly. But she caught the petulance under his tone.
So it was important.
“Then give me a hint?” she asked softly.

Chapter 189
He sighed, eyes dimming. “Sunflower brooch. A kidnapping. I was the boy who escaped.”
Her breath caught. Memories she’d buried long ago reeled back like a filmstri
“You…you were the one who got out first?”
He nodded. “I fell sick after escaping. By the time I came back with help, the warehouse was empty. That brooch was all I found.”
Her lips twitched, struggling to hold back laughter.
“What?” His gut tightened with dread.
She plucked the brooch from his pocket and tossed it straight into the trash.
“Sophie!” His voice dropped to a dangerous low. “Explain. Now.”
“That brooch wasn’t mine. It belonged to one of the female kidnappers.”
Her eyes gleamed with mischief. “They left it on purpose, to fake my death in the fire. And you…actually fell for it.”
Her laugh bubbled free. “All these years you’ve been holding onto it, sentimental over the wrong thing.”
Marcus’s face darkened, his jaw tight. His hand–just touching the brooch moments ago–suddenly felt filthy.
“Enough.”
