**Through Silent Meadows We Trace Stories Left Behind Yesterday**
by Asa Rowan Flint
**Chapter 19**
Once the dinner plates were cleared and the remnants of the meal had faded into the background, Sophie stood outside, her hand raised in an attempt to catch a cab. The evening air was crisp, filled with the scents of autumn leaves and distant bonfires. Yet, before she could signal a passing vehicle, Dr. Mason interjected with a firm insistence that he would drive her home.
As the car’s engine roared to life, the atmosphere shifted. Dr. Mason, with his usual exuberance, dove headfirst into a stream of gossip that seemed to flow effortlessly from his lips.
“Ms. Chandler,” he began, his eyes glinting with curiosity, “what’s truly happening between you and those two men?”
Sophie felt her chest tighten at the mention of Liam and Mr. Morgan. “You pursued Liam for years, finally got engaged to him, and now—surprise!—you’re expecting a child with Mr. Morgan, who just happens to be Liam’s uncle,” he continued, his voice laced with incredulity. “If you go through with marrying Liam, will the baby call him ‘Dad’ or ‘Nephew’?”
With a heavy sigh, Sophie replied, “I’m not marrying Liam.” The weariness in her voice was palpable; she had no energy left to delve into the complexities of her situation.
“What?!” Dr. Mason’s shock was so profound that he abruptly slammed on the brakes, causing the car to jolt. “You’re really walking away from him?”
In Riverland, the tale of Sophie’s unwavering devotion to Liam was well-known. Friends often joked that even if the sun rose in the west, she would remain steadfast in her love for him. But now, the very notion of her leaving him felt like a seismic shift—was the sun indeed rising in the west?
The mere mention of Liam stirred a discontent within Sophie, prompting her to redirect the conversation. “Your brother’s a lawyer, right? He specializes in finance cases? I need his contact information.”
Though Liora was officially registered under Liam’s name, the contract itself was tied to the Morgan Group. This meant she was gearing up for a battle against a corporate behemoth, and she had to determine if pursuing a lawsuit was even a viable option.
Dr. Mason’s brow furrowed in confusion. “You’re actually planning to file a lawsuit?”
