It was precisely because he had no weakness that Marcus had always been ruthless, efficient, and merciless.
And it was because of that arrogance–believing he was untouchable–that Sophie had ended up in danger.
Chris had never seen his boss like this, and for once he had no idea how to console him. He simply stood silently at his side.
Marcus’s eyes were dark and hollow as he turned to the city skyline outside. If this had been the Old Master’s doing, then at least Sophie and the baby would be safe. That fragile thought had been the only thing keeping him standing these past days. But now, even that belief was crumbling.
If it wasn’t the Old Master, then Sophie’s life might already be hanging by a thread.
His gaze hardened, sharp with lethal intent.
“Notify everyone. I’m calling a press conference.”
Chris froze. “Sir, the public is already furious about our lockdowns and searches. If you hold a press conference now, they’ll tear you apart. The backlash against you–and the Morgan Group–will be catastrophic. Please, think carefully!”
Marcus cut him a sidelong glance, his tone low and razor–sharp.
“You think I care about those things anymore?”
Chris’s throat bobbed. He had followed Marcus for years, knew him better than anyone. And yet he had never imagined he would one day see this man–the iron–hearted tyrant of Riverland’s business world–ready to gamble everything for one woman.
“Do it as I said. If she comes back without a single scratch, I’ll call it victory. If I lose everything else, so be it.”
The words were calm, but Chris felt the world tilting under his feet. Marcus had never once conceded in his life. His empire was built on dominance and never bowing to anyone.
But for Sophie, he was bowing.
Chris’s eyes stung. His boss–who had crushed rivals without blinking–was now tearing down his kingdom just to save one woman.
“Go,” Marcus said, his voice hollow. “If we don’t find her soon…I’ll lose my mind.”
He turned and left, his tall frame shadowed with loneliness.
Half an hour later, in one of Paris’s grandest conference halls, Marcus faced the press.
He still wore the same suit from the night Sophie disappeared, now wrinkled and stained. His sharp jaw was shadowed by stubble. The man once feared across continents now looked weathered, haunted–broken by love.
Every camera clicked furiously, capturing his rare vulnerability.
When the room filled, Marcus finally spoke, his voice raw and gravelly.
“I called this conference for one reason.”
“If anyone can find Sophie within three days, I will sign over every share, every asset in my possession. Everything.”

Chapter 192
“I give you my word. And I will hold no grudge against whoever took her–so long as she’s returned alive.”
Then his tone dropped, lethal as a blade.
“But if she comes back harmed–even a single hair out of place–then even if I have nothing left, I will make sure the culprit begs for death.”
The room fell into stunned silence. Reporters stared at him, unable to process the words.
Chris stood frozen, feeling as if struck by lightning. His boss hadn’t just bent–he had shattered.
And he realized Marcus had said “found,” not “returned.” A deliberate choice. It meant Marcus would overlook the abduction itself–if Sophie
was handed back alive.
To Marcus, bowing this low was no different from kneeling before the entire world.
Chris’s eyes burned. His boss had staked everything on Sophie’s life.
After a beat, the reporters erupted, bombarding him with questions. But Marcus was already on his feet, striding out without another glance.
Within the hour, the news swept across France. All anger over the lockdowns evaporated. Instead, both government and citizens surged to action–searching not for profit, but for a chance at fortune.
Back at the Morgan Group’s branch headquarters, Eric approached Marcus.
“Thank you,” Eric said quietly. “For everything you’ve done for Sophie.”
Marcus didn’t even look up from the mountain of leads he was sorting through.
“If not for me, she wouldn’t be suffering this. There’s nothing to thank me for.”
“Chris told me you haven’t slept in three days,” Eric pressed. “Let me handle these leads. You’ll collapse before she’s even found.”
Marcus’s eyes stayed fixed on the files, voice steely.
“Not until she’s back. I can’t fall.”
