Shaking out her wrist, Irene smirked.

“That’s enough for today. But if you ever talk back to me again, this is the price you’ll pay.”

She stormed out.

Sophie ignored the fire burning across her face and pressed herself against the door, straining to catch any sound from outside.

Since waking up here, she and Liam’s family hadn’t stepped beyond these walls once. The phones and electronics were all dead. The only contact with the outside world came when meals were dropped off–those few minutes her only chance to hear anything.

Now Irene’s shrill voice carried through the door.

“No meat again? You know there’s a pregnant woman here! How’s Lena supposed to keep her strength with nothing but watery soup?”

The delivery man’s voice was ice–cold. “Here’s your food. Take it or leave it.”

Irene grabbed his arm.

“Bring us meat, supplements, something for a pregnant woman–or else I’ll—”

“Or else what?” he cut in, his tone like a knife.

She stammered, panic flashing across her face. “Or else…I’ll leave! I don’t care what your plan is. I just want my grandchild born safe!”

“Mother, enough!”

Liam wheeled out of Lena’s room, glaring.

“I told you take the food. Don’t ask questions. Don’t make trouble.”

“But Liam,” Irene whined, pointing to the food, “look at this slop. It’s barely scraps! Lena’s pregnant–she can’t just eat this.”

Liam’s hand curled tight on the armrest. He glanced at the food.

The delivery man gave a low, mocking laugh.

“Mr. Liam, you know exactly why the meals look like this. Be grateful Sophie’s here at all. Without her, none of you would even get this soup.”

He slammed the door behind him, locking it from the outside.

Irene’s face burned with fury. “What does that mean? We’re supposed to thank that little whore Sophie for the scraps we get?”

“Enough, Mother.” Liam’s voice was sharp. He turned and wheeled himself out to the balcony.

Sophie cracked her door just enough to peek through. She saw Irene gathering the food and carrying it all into Lena’s room, muttering under her breath.

“If there’s not enough, Lena will eat more. My precious grandson won’t go hungry.”

Sophie’s gaze dropped to her own belly.

Baby, looks like tonight we’ll have to go hungry…

She widened the door crack, eyes fixed on the balcony.

Now, for the third time, he was on the line.

Sophie strained to catch a word, but heard nothing.

Liam noticed her watching. He snapped the call shut and wheeled over.
