**Through Silent Meadows We Trace Stories Left Behind Yesterday by Asa Rowan Flint**
**Chapter 31**

Liam swiftly pressed a finger to her lips, silencing her. “I orchestrated this entire plan. She remains blissfully unaware that the child isn’t mine. Once the wedding bells chime, I’ll confront her with accusations of infidelity. She’ll walk away empty-handed, and I’ll claim half of the Chandler family’s fortune!”

Irene’s eyes sparkled with a devious glint as she processed his words. “That’s my son!” she exclaimed, her voice laced with pride and a hint of possessiveness.

“Exactly, Mom. That’s precisely why we must tread carefully around Sophie for now. We’ll bide our time until after the vows are exchanged.”

Irene offered a reassuring pat on his shoulder, her voice dripping with confidence. “You needn’t worry. Sophie has been after you for years. Everyone in Riverland knows how desperately she longs for you. Just a small nudge from you, and she’ll leap at the chance to marry you.”

A soft, almost defeated sigh escaped Liam’s lips.

Recently, Sophie’s fervor had dimmed. He held onto the hope that it was merely a fleeting phase, a temporary lull in her affections.

Unbeknownst to them, lurking around the corner of the second floor, Lena had overheard every word. Her fingers curled into fists at her sides, a thrill coursing through her veins.

So, her brother had never intended to truly marry Sophie! This was utterly perfect!

He was setting Sophie up for a monumental fall, and she couldn’t afford to let this opportunity slip through her fingers!

Sophie, on the other hand, remained blissfully unaware, sleeping until noon. When she finally stirred and reached for her phone, a new post from Lena caught her eye.

This time, Lena had adopted a tone that was surprisingly sincere and apologetic. The wave of online vitriol had begun to wane, though a few irate comments still lingered. Yet, the buzz on the trending page showed no signs of fading.

Sophie texted Marcus, her fingers hovering over the screen as she typed: “Thank you, Mr. Morgan.”

She waited, her heart racing, but no reply came. With a resigned sigh, she rose from her bed and made her way downstairs in search of food.

As soon as she opened the door, a powerful floral aroma enveloped her senses, overwhelming and intrusive.
