**Chapter 5**
It struck her like a flash of lightning, illuminating the dark corners of her confusion.
Sophie stood frozen, unable to process the revelation. She glanced at the room number once more, her heart racing in her chest. Then again, as if willing the universe to change the name that accompanied it.
Marcus.
The clarity of that name hit her like a tidal wave, washing over her thoughts and leaving her breathless. A cold shiver crawled down her spine, tightening her chest with disbelief.
She had shared a bed with Marcus…
Her knees buckled beneath her, and she sank into the chair, feeling the weight of the world pressing heavily on her shoulders, as if the very air had thickened around her.
“Miss, Mr. Morgan is here,” came the cheerful voice of May, the housekeeper, echoing from the upstairs hallway.
Sophie jolted as if awakened from a nightmare. “Which Mr. Morgan?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper, laced with trepidation.
The housekeeper chuckled lightly, “Who else? Your fiancé, of course.”
A shaky breath escaped Sophie’s lips, and she reluctantly made her way downstairs, her mind still tangled in the chaos of her thoughts.
In the living room, Liam stood waiting, clad in a sharply tailored Brioni suit that accentuated his broad shoulders. He held a lavish bouquet of roses, their vibrant colors almost mocking her with their beauty.
“You’re here kind of late,” she remarked flatly, trying to keep her voice steady, though it trembled with unspoken turmoil.
“I missed you,” Liam replied, though his smile didn’t quite reach his eyes, leaving a flicker of doubt in her mind. “Just wanted to see you.”
A knot twisted in her stomach, a mix of guilt and dread swirling within her.
Noticing her icy demeanor, Liam’s smile faltered slightly. “Sophie, have you been avoiding me? Did I do something to upset you?”
She poured herself a glass of water, the cool liquid a brief comfort as she sat down, the weight of his gaze heavy upon her. “No. I’ve just been tired, I guess,” she murmured, avoiding his penetrating stare.
Liam approached her, placing the flowers on the coffee table. The overwhelming scent of roses filled the air, and she wrinkled her nose in distaste, the floral aroma twisting in her stomach.
“Sophie…” He settled beside her, his eyes sparkling with excitement. “Do you remember that jacket you left at my place?”
Her heart skipped a beat, panic surging through her.
Crap.
The medical report was still tucked away in that pocket.
“Yeah, I remember. Why?” she asked, gripping her glass tightly, willing herself to appear composed.
Liam’s face lit up, and he took her hand in his, his enthusiasm infectious. “I’m going to be a dad, right?”
“Why didn’t you tell me something so big?” she replied, her voice barely above a whisper, a storm brewing behind her eyes.
Sophie stared at him, her mind racing.
