Inside the stall. Sophie was already too cold to speak.
At first, she had cried for help, but the deafening roar of race car engines outside drowned out every sound. Gradually, her voice weakened until it disappeared altogether.
Her body heat slowly drained away, and her consciousness began to blur.
Would anyone come to save her?
The Chandler family was far away in Riverland, and her parents had no idea she was in trouble. What about Marcus? What was he doing now?
She didn’t know why, but in that moment of despair, the image that popped into her mind was that man’s cold, distant face.
If it were him… would he come?
A bitter smile crept across her lips.
Just then, hurried footsteps echoed from afar.
Sophie thought Celine and her group had returned. She shut her eyes, bracing herself for round two of the torment.
“Sophie!”
That voice…
Sophie’s eyes flew open in disbelief. “Marcus?”
“It’s me.”
That familiar voice shattered the last of her emotional defenses.
“I thought… I thought you wouldn’t come.” Her voice trembled with tears.
There was a loud noise as something was moved outside. Soon, the door was pushed open.
Marcus stood there, his expression terrifyingly dark, but in his eyes–there was a softness she had never seen before.
“I’m sorry I was late.”
“I thought… no one would come.”
Marcus strode forward and pulled her into his arms.
His body was burning hot, like a fire wrapping around her frozen frame. Sophie clung to him tightly, like a drowning person grabbing onto a lifeline.
“Did they hurt you?”
Sophie nodded, her eyes red with unshed tears.
Seeing her trying so hard not to cry, Marcus felt something twist in his chest. He didn’t know what that feeling was–but he knew one thing for sure:
He wanted to make those people pay.
“I won’t let them get away with this.” His voice was ice–cold.
