**Through Silent Meadows We Trace Stories Left Behind**
**Chapter 59**
Sophie offered no words; instead, she nestled her head against Marcus’ thigh, surrendering to the sweet embrace of slumber.
Her breath came in quick, shallow gasps, her entire form radiating warmth, and her delicate features were painted a vivid crimson, as if they might bleed from the intensity of her blush.
Marcus swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing nervously in his throat. A surge of heat coursed through him, igniting every nerve ending in a way he had never experienced before.
This was an unprecedented moment for him—falling for someone while completely sober, devoid of any distractions or substances to cloud his judgment.
Just then, the door swung open, and Dr. Zack stepped inside, only to be met by a wave of stifling heat that hit him like a brick wall.
“Good grief, is this a sauna?” he exclaimed, eyes widening at the oppressive warmth enveloping the room.
Marcus was drenched in sweat, his black shirt clinging to him like a second skin, and even his breath had turned uneven, betraying his racing heart.
Zack took a step forward, intending to open a window for ventilation, but the moment he glanced at Marcus, he halted.
“She said she was cold,” Marcus replied, his voice low and firm.
It was only then that Zack’s gaze fell upon Sophie, who lay peacefully asleep on Marcus’ lap. She was cocooned snugly in a thick blanket, with only her flushed face peeking out, a stark contrast to the warmth surrounding her.
“Marcus,” Zack said, a hint of disbelief in his tone. “You’re really smitten with her.”
He paused for a moment, allowing the weight of his words to settle. “Even if that child she’s carrying isn’t yours, the two of you are already tangled in a web too intricate to simply walk away from.”
“Cut the crap, Zack. Just help her bring the fever down,” Marcus shot back, his urgency palpable.
Zack sighed, the gravity of the situation pressing down on him as he set to work.
Ten minutes later, after administering the injection, Zack was left dripping with sweat, his brow furrowed in concern.
“Marcus, if her temperature stays this high, it could affect her breathing. She might suffocate. We need to get some air circulating in here,” he urged, his voice laced with urgency.
After a moment of hesitation, Marcus finally nodded, the weight of the decision heavy on his shoulders.
As soon as the window was opened, a refreshing breeze rushed in, a welcome relief that filled the room.
Zack exhaled deeply, the tension easing slightly. “What on earth did I do in my last life to end up sweating like a pig in a sauna just to treat someone in the middle of summer?” he muttered, shaking his head in exasperation.
“When will she wake up?” Marcus asked, his voice barely above a whisper, laced with worry.
“Tomorrow morning, most likely. We can’t use anything too strong since she’s pregnant. It has to be slow and gentle,” Zack replied, his tone softening as he glanced at Sophie.
Zack hesitated for a moment, then ventured, “Marcus… have you truly fallen for Sophie?”
Marcus locked his gaze on Sophie, his heart a tempest of emotions, yet he remained silent, unable to articulate the turmoil within.
