**Through Silent Meadows We Trace Stories Left Behind Yesterday by Asa Rowan Flint**

**Chapter 61**

Their gazes locked, and an almost electric tension crackled in the air between them, palpable and thick.

“Thank you, Marcus,” Sophie said, her voice imbued with genuine gratitude. “I know someone like you has a hundred ways to bury a trending topic.” Her words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken implications.

“But you chose not to, just to let this scandal blow up and bury the news about my pregnancy,” she continued, her heart racing as she spoke.

Marcus leaned back slightly, his demeanor cool and collected. “You’re overthinking it,” he replied, his tone casual, almost dismissive. “I didn’t suppress it because I didn’t see the need.”

He stood there, hands casually shoved into his pockets, exuding an air of nonchalance that only heightened Sophie’s unease.

For a fleeting moment, Sophie felt frozen in place, grappling with the ambiguity of his words. Did he genuinely mean what he said, or was there more to his reasoning?

It felt too coincidental, almost orchestrated. Just moments ago, he had mentioned that if something significant occurred, it could easily overshadow the pregnancy scandal, drawing the public’s attention elsewhere.

And then, as if on cue, Celine and her entourage of heiresses had been doused with sewage, their misfortune catapulting them to the top of the trending list.

Sophie’s mind raced. It was hard to fathom that the influential families behind those socialites would allow such a disgraceful scandal to become public knowledge. Surely, Marcus must have had a hand in it.
