**Through Silent Meadows We Trace Stories Left Behind Yesterday by Asa Rowan Flint**
**Chapter 8**

As the afternoon sun dipped lower in the sky, casting a warm golden hue over the landscape, Liam made his entrance, arms laden with an assortment of gifts.

Sophie, who was just about to descend the staircase, caught sight of him from the landing. A surge of irritation welled up within her, bubbling just beneath the surface like a pot ready to boil over.

“Hey, baby! Look at these! They’re all from the new spring collection,” Liam exclaimed, his voice bright and cheerful, as if he were announcing a grand prize. He noticed the way she cradled her head in her hands and instinctively reached out, his brow furrowing with concern. “You’ve got a headache? Let me give you a massage; it’ll help.”

Sophie instinctively stepped back, evading his hand as if it were a hot flame. “No need,” she replied curtly, her tone clipped.

His hand hung suspended in the air, a moment of vulnerability etched across his face. The warmth in his eyes dimmed, replaced by a shadow of worry. “Sophie… is this because of the baby?”

In a flash, Sophie clamped her hand over his mouth, her eyes darting towards May, who had been quietly observing the exchange.

May caught the silent cue and discreetly slipped out of the room, leaving the two of them alone in the tense atmosphere.

“I told you, I haven’t told my family about the baby yet. Why would you bring it up on purpose?” Sophie pulled her hand away, her voice thick with irritation, as if she were trying to shake off an unwelcome thought.

“Sophie, I can feel it… you’ve been drifting away from me lately. I’m scared of losing you,” Liam confessed, his voice a mixture of desperation and vulnerability.

Sophie shrugged, attempting to dismiss his concern. “Maybe it’s just hormones, you know? Mood swings and all that. I’ve just been on edge recently.”

Liam’s gaze swept over her, his eyes searching for the truth hidden behind her words.

Was it really just the pregnancy causing her to feel this way?

“I’m tired. I need to lie down,” Sophie said, her tone smooth yet firm as she gently pulled her hand away, signaling the end of the conversation.

Liam, sensing her need for space, ruffled her hair affectionately. “Alright. I’ll head out then.”

Sophie watched him leave, her heart racing as she felt the weight of his presence lift from the room.

Only when she heard the sound of his car engine rumbling to life did she allow herself to exhale, the tension in her shoulders easing slightly.

She could sense that he had been probing her, testing her resolve.
