Sienna's "okay" was entirely redundant.
The lock on the bathroom door of the old apartment had been broken since she moved in. Living alone, she never bothered fixing it; they usually just knocked.
This time, Jorrod simply turned the knob and pushed the door open.
Billowing steam rushed out, carrying the soft, fragrant scent of her body wash.
In the small space lined with gray tiles, her pale silhouette was strikingly obvious.
Jorrod averted his gaze, grabbed the bathrobe hanging on the hook, and stepped inside to wrap it around her.
He crouched down, the cold tiles pressing against his knees. Not daring to apply pressure, he lightly encircled her reddened ankle, observing it under the overhead light.
"It's swollen," he concluded. His gaze was somber, his voice low—a stark contrast to the man who usually barely dared to speak in her presence.
"Mhm..." Swathed in the robe, Sienna was sufficiently covered, but the awareness of her nakedness underneath kept her from meeting his eyes. She stared at her ankle in his gentle grasp.
The next second, his arm slipped behind her back, while his other hand scooped under her knees.
"Put your arms around my neck," he murmured, his voice rumbling right against her ear.
Sienna's ears burned red, but she had no time to be shy.
He was her only support.
She carefully wrapped her arms around Jorrod's neck.
Suddenly weightless, she was lifted effortlessly into his arms.
Burying her face in his chest, she felt the steady strength of his arms and the inviting warmth radiating through his soft cotton shirt.
Right now, he felt incredibly reliable.
Even his footsteps were meticulously measured, smooth and steady, terrified of jostling her.
Jorrod's jaw tightened.
Unlike her flustered state, he was eerily quiet, his lips pressed into a grim line the entire way.
