Silas's heart dropped to his stomach.
He mentally cursed.
He was dead.
Theodore Vaughn marched in with an intimidating aura, followed closely by Jorrod's uncle, Theron Vaughn.
Theodore immediately rushed to his grandson's bedside to check on him.
After a moment of pained silence, he spun around and leveled a furious glare at Silas. "Absurd! Is this how you play games with a man's life?!"
Silas knew he was entirely in the wrong.
"Mr. Vaughn, I swear, I only kept it from you because he really wasn't in any grave danger."
"You call being locked in a coma 'no grave danger'?"
Silas rubbed his nose, muttering under his breath, "That's literally what the doctor said..."
Besides, Silas thought to himself, the car crash wasn't even the issue here. The guy had literally knocked himself into a coma by going too hard.
He wisely kept that last part to himself.
Looking at Theodore fuming, Silas was genuinely terrified the old man might have a heart attack right then and there.
"And you." Having finished tearing into Silas, Theodore turned his fury onto his own son. "I told you to investigate. You mobilized all those connections and resources, and what did you actually do?"
"If Nate hadn't stepped up to help—tracking down the driver and bringing in the best specialists—I would have genuinely believed Jorrod was just tied up with business overseas!"
Nate? Silas tentatively raised a hand. "Uh, Mr. Vaughn, who's Nate?"
Theodore stated it was Nathaniel Yale.
Silas was stunned. He had always suspected Nathaniel had his eyes on Sienna, constantly calling her "Sienna" with annoying familiarity.
He noticed Nathaniel only ever addressed other female colleagues professionally by their last names.
Hearing Theodore praise him, everything suddenly clicked.
The accident had indeed happened a while ago, but...
"But, Dad, Jorrod... he is actually in a coma."
"I said, theref—"
Before Theodore could finish his sentence.
A quiet, raspy voice broke through the tension in the room. "Grandpa..."
Everyone froze, their heads snapping toward the bed.
Having just woken up from a two-day slumber, Jorrod was still visibly weak. He pressed a hand against the mattress to push himself up. Silas immediately rushed over to help him sit, while Theron frantically hit the call button for the doctor.
Theodore was overjoyed, practically vibrating as he looked his grandson over. "Jorrod, where does it hurt? Are you in pain?"
Jorrod simply shook his head. "No pain. I'm fine."
"Grandpa??" Silas's eyes widened as a horrifying realization hit him.
