"Huh?"
Wesley had no idea who to listen to and looked at Silas with a conflicted expression.
Silas sighed heavily and waved his hand, signaling the man to leave.
Sienna crouched down slightly.
With almost numb detachment, she reached into the pile and picked up the silver butterfly pendant.
The cold metal rested against her palm. It had clearly been thrown against the floor, causing the left side of the pendant to cave in right where the wing was, looking as though it had been brutally snapped, permanently grounding the butterfly.
She pressed her lips together and gripped the pendant tightly in her hand.
Silas couldn't tell what Sienna was staring at, but whatever it was, it looked warped and broken.
"Ahem, Sienna, I'll go talk to Jorrod..."
"There's no need." Sienna stood up, casually slipping the necklace into her pocket, and looked up at Silas. "He's already made his choice, and I'll respect it. This relationship started out of nowhere anyway. It's fine for it to end like this."
Fine?! What was fine about this?! Silas felt like an anxious bystander watching a train wreck unfold in slow motion.
"Sienna, listen to me, Jorrod doesn't mean it. He just recovered, so his brain is still a little scrambled. He doesn't quite remember how deeply you two fell for each other. You of all people know he's not entirely in his right mind..."
Sienna remained disturbingly calm. "I think he looks perfectly normal."
He looked ten, a hundred times more normal than the Jorrod Vaughn she had known.
In fact.
This was the real Jorrod Vaughn.
"You... don't look like that. Give me some kind of reaction." Even a little emotion, even a few tears—that would be a normal response.
Instead, she was unnervingly blank, matching Jorrod's exact level of apathy.
No, it was different.
His was a freezing indifference, while hers was the hollowed-out numbness of someone who had lost all desire to fight.
