To be honest, when the word "Thanks" left his lips, she almost thought he was calling her by a pet name.
But her original intention had never been out of fear that he would go hungry. She just genuinely didn't want the pastries her mother made to go to waste.
She murmured an acknowledgment and didn't continue the conversation.
For a rare moment, the two of them found a quiet harmony.
After returning from washing up, Sienna stood in the doorway, shooting a thoughtful glance at the clean, spacious bed and the cement floor that made sleeping on the ground impossible.
Sienna had no idea what Jorrod was thinking, but there was only one bed. Whoever claimed it first, got it.
She took off her shoes, climbed into bed, and laid down perfectly straight right in the dead center.
When Jorrod walked into the room moments later, this was the sight that greeted him.
The woman was lying stiff as a board, completely hogging the middle of the large bed, as if terrified someone was going to wrest it away from her.
Jorrod let out a faint, almost imperceptible sigh. "I'm not fighting you for it. You take the bed."
"You better not," Sienna huffed. "I'm the one who deserves to sleep here anyway. It wasn't my lie, and I wasn't the one who insisted on staying here. Either way, I am absolutely sleeping on the bed tonight. If you're uncomfortable or unwilling, you can go outside, tell Quincy the truth, and admit you were wrong."
As she grumbled, she watched the man step closer, his shadow gradually dimming the light falling across her face.
Jorrod casually patted the left side of the headboard, bent down, and sat on the edge of the mattress.
Sienna sprang up like a coiled spring.
"Stop overreacting," Jorrod shot her a look. "I'm just sitting here to lean back. That stool is too short."
Seeing that he was, indeed, just leaning against the headboard and looking down to work on the laptop resting on his lap, Sienna laid back down.
They had wasted a lot of time during the day, and an unknown amount of time passed as Jorrod continued to work through his tasks.
When he finally turned to check, Sienna was lying quietly with her back to him, seemingly fast asleep.
He checked his watch.
Eleven o'clock.
It was definitely time to rest.
