The two sat in the courtyard to enjoy the evening breeze for a while longer. Seeing it was getting late and knowing the young woman had an early morning ahead, Quincy finally stood up to shoo them off to bed.
Sienna washed up at the outdoor sink first. When she returned to the room, she found the lights on, but the space was entirely empty.
Since she had already agreed not to take the bed tonight, she pulled up a small stool and leaned against the little table to scroll through some videos before sleeping.
Not long after, the door was pushed open.
She turned to look.
"Take the bed," Jorrod stated flatly.
Sienna opened her mouth, about to argue.
"I'm not in the habit of sleeping in a bed someone else has used."
The man's flippant words floated over, and she immediately rolled her eyes.
Fine by me. Sienna hopped onto the mattress, pulled the covers over herself, and went straight to sleep.
He could sleep on the floor for all she cared.
Jorrod stared silently at the lump beneath the blankets for a moment. He grabbed his laptop from the table and flipped the light switch off as he left.

The next day.
The car sent to pick Jorrod up arrived early, waiting at the entrance by eight o'clock.
When they first arrived, Quincy had been scowling and trying to chase them away. Now that it was time to part, he was the one who couldn't bear to see the two kids leave.
They exchanged their goodbyes at the door.
Suddenly, Quincy pulled a small object from his jacket—The Crimson Keepsake—and shoved it into Sienna's hands, refusing to take no for an answer.
Sienna froze in surprise.
"I like you, kid," Quincy explained. "Take this back and wear it for fun. Consider it my welcome gift to Jorrod's girlfriend."
Sienna knew full well her status was a complete sham.
He leaned against the backrest, his long legs casually parted, one arm resting lazily on the door's armrest. His half-closed eyes made him look like he was about to drift off, yet the gaze beneath his lashes was sharp and completely lucid, drifting lazily toward the passenger seat.
From his angle, he had a perfect view of Sienna's profile and the nape of her neck.
She had tied her hair up early, twisting it into a high bun at the crown of her head.
As sunlight flickered past the window, it caught on her neck, reflecting a flash of silver.
It was the butterfly necklace that had been hanging around her neck for the past few days.
Jorrod's gaze flickered.
He remembered finding that necklace on his own neck while showering after returning from the hospital. He had no idea where it came from, only that it looked vaguely familiar. Knowing it wasn't his, he had simply taken it off and left it on the bathroom counter.
By the time he thought of it again, it was gone. He assumed Wesley had probably grabbed it while collecting the laundry.
Since he didn't know its origin, he hadn't given it much thought.
So, it had ended up back around Sienna's neck after all?
