Sienna fought tooth and nail to stop him, her face turning crimson from the panic. Assuming his daughter was just mortified, George finally dropped the idea. He gave her a few more reminders before heading out with Lillian.

As they left, Lillian made sure to mention, "I packed extra portions of dumplings. Take some over to Liam. I bet he hasn't tried these yet."

George teased his wife. "Always thinking about your son-in-law."

Lillian nudged him with her elbow and glared.

Sienna shifted uncomfortably and offered a vague nod.

Instead of heading straight down, George stopped in the hallway and slapped his forehead, remembering he wanted to visit Arthur.

George knocked on the door across the hall.

There was no response at first, but after a few more knocks, footsteps echoed from inside.

"Who is it?"

"It's me, George."

The heavy front door cracked open, revealing Arthur's wife, Martha Carter.

She glanced between the couple with her droopy eyes before forcing a smile and ushering them inside.

"Arthur isn't home... Oh, you shouldn't have brought gifts..."

Martha waved her hands in refusal, but she was no match for George's insistence.

He firmly set down two expensive gift baskets on the entryway cabinet.

She led the couple to the living room and hurried to the kitchen, returning with tea and a fruit platter.

The cheap plastic tray held a few bruised peaches, their dull skin still wet from a quick wash.

"Our home is a bit modest, so I don't have much to offer. The grocery store had a sale the other day, so I picked out the best ones. Please, don't laugh at us."

"Don't be ridiculous! Arthur and I came from the same town. We've been friends for years, and Sienna and Liam grew up together. I cherish our bond! Besides, Liam is doing so well at that big corporate job. We just wanted to stop by and congratulate you."

George boomed with a hearty laugh.

Martha offered a tight smile. "Arthur loves to brag. It's nothing that grand..."

George laughed again. "Modesty! Excellence is excellence! There's no need to be shy about it."
