The other voice constantly reminded her that Jorrod was currently mentally compromised. With the heavy traffic on the roads, what if he got hit by a car? Without a metal shell protecting him this time, it wouldn't just be an injury—he could actually die.
Sienna squeezed her eyes shut.
The deafening roar of the downpour echoed in her ears. In the darkness of her closed eyes, the sound amplified endlessly, as if a catastrophic flood was violently crashing down right beside her head.
She was going to lose her mind!
Sienna's eyes flew open. She grabbed her jacket from the back of her chair, shoving her arms through the sleeves as she rushed out to find Leona. However, Leona's assistant informed her that the Director had urgent business and had left for the airport that afternoon; she was probably boarding her flight right now.
Out of options, she was forced to ask Yardley.
There was zero chance Yardley was going to let her have her way.
"It's not that I won't approve your leave, Sienna, but think about how many times you've asked off lately. Taking time off for a birthday, taking time off to pick up a friend? What, is your friend mentally disabled? He doesn't know to go inside when it rains?"
With Yardley blocking her exit and the rain outside showing no signs of stopping, Sienna swallowed her pride in front of him for the very first time.
"Director Yates, I promise this will be the absolute last time this month. Just give me two hours. No, one hour. Just let me take him home..."
Yardley scoffed loudly. "Please don't call me Director. I'm just the Vice Director. Sigh... Leona treating you well is her own generosity. But you? You're acting like you own the place. Do you honestly think Syllable Studio is your own living room?"
Seeing Yardley's blatantly nasty attitude, Sienna dropped the act. "So you're just not going to approve it?"
Yardley lifted his chin arrogantly. "Exactly. You're either always asking for time off or sleeping at your desk. Believe me, I could fire you right now as a warning to everyone else..."
Smack!
Sienna unclipped her ID badge and slammed it violently onto Yardley's desk.
Yardley jumped. "What—what is the meaning of this? Are you trying to hit me?"
The solitary figure stood forlornly in the storm, tightly clutching the bread she had shoved into his hands before leaving. He was drenched down to the bone, without a single dry patch on his body. Rainwater streamed relentlessly down his hair and clothes. It wasn't until his dull, lifeless eyes finally locked onto hers that a faint glimmer of light returned to them.
Sienna cursed violently under her breath. She bolted forward, thrusting her arm high into the air to shield him with the umbrella.
Over the deafening roar of the rain, she screamed at the top of her lungs. "Jorrod, are you out of your damn mind?! Don't you know how to wait inside when it rains?!"
Jorrod didn't display the pitiful resentment from her dream, nor did he exhibit the murderous rage she had feared.
He merely pressed his lips together, his long eyelashes casting shadows as he remained utterly silent. Like a child who knew he had done something terribly wrong, he stood still and let the freezing rainwater drip from his face.
Sienna furrowed her brow and grabbed his wrist. "Let's go. Get in the car."
In a reaction she completely failed to anticipate, Jorrod yanked his hand away from her grip.
