Before Sienna could even finish, Professor Layne scoffed loudly.
"What an absolute load of garbage."
Sienna frowned. How could a highly respected academic use such vulgar language?
Layne completely lost his appetite, and Garrett was utterly speechless.
If Garrett didn't already know Zoe was the real Mrs. Thorne, he might have actually believed Sienna's performance.
She lied without even blinking. Her audacity was truly unmatched.
Zoe wasn't surprised at all. If Sienna had just told the truth, Layne might have let them down gently. Instead, she had just nuked her only bridge.
Layne's expression turned glacial.
"I can't help you. Find another way, Mr. Thorne. I trust my student won't cause unnecessary trouble for innocent people. I'm too old to get involved in your messy private lives. Take your—"
Layne couldn't even bring himself to finish the sentence.
Hayden got the message and stood up.
As they turned to leave, Layne glared at the expensive gifts they had brought.
"Take that trash with you."
Hayden didn't move, but Sienna, embarrassed and furious, snatched the bags off the table and marched out with her head held high.
The moment the door clicked shut, Layne slammed his hand on the table.
"Shameless! Absolutely shameless! Zoe, divorce that man immediately!"
Layne was so angry he was practically hyperventilating.
Zoe smiled coldly. A divorce was definitely happening.
"Don't go easy on that woman. Whatever you do, I've got your back."
Layne was fuming. Zoe poured him some water to calm him down.
It was obvious Layne cared for her like a father.
He was a thousand times more genuine than Hayden ever was.
Garrett seized the moment. "Zoe, you've known the professor for years. He doesn't have any children of his own..."
"..."
Zoe took the hint. She refilled Layne's cup and officially accepted him as her godfather.
Layne grinned from ear to ear, clearly thrilled.
"Zoe is my precious daughter now. Maybe I should adopt a godson too. Make it a complete set."
Garrett caught the implication and raised an eyebrow, dodging the bait.
Layne wasn't just trying to adopt a daughter; he was trying to play matchmaker.
Zoe blushed and pretended she didn't understand.
Garrett wisely kept quiet.
After lunch, Zoe and Garrett prepared to head back to the office.
Outside, a luxurious black SUV was parked by the curb. Hayden's handsome face was visible through the half-open window. He held an unlit cigarette, spinning it thoughtfully.
As the three of them walked out, the car pulled up right in front of them.
"Get in. We need to talk."
