She knew exactly how expensive that piece of jewelry was. With no other option, she sketched the necklace from memory and commissioned a jeweler to recreate an identical replica based on the design.
When Monday rolled around, there was still no sign of Hayden. She had stopped thinking about him entirely, falling into her routine of dropping Lily off at school before heading to Sterling Group.
On the flip side, Colin drove Hayden straight to City Hall first thing in the morning. At first, the assistant was baffled as to why the boss needed to be there. He only put the pieces together when Hayden kept checking his watch, waiting two full hours with absolutely no sign of Zoe.
"Where is she?" Hayden barked. Colin's eyelid twitched. Why was he asking him? How on earth would he know?
"Call her. Tell her to get to City Hall immediately."
Flaunting the title of Mrs. Thorne while openly cuckolding him with another manโHayden decided he had tolerated her for long enough. He would pay every cent of child support for Lily. He would split all the marital assets straight down the middle. From this day forward, they would walk their separate paths. They would be absolutely done.
Colin internally panicked. Something catastrophic was about to happen. Before making the call, he felt the urgent need to confirm.
"Mr. Thorne, you're asking the missus to come down here to...?"
A cold sweat broke out over Colin's back. Was the boss actually filing for divorce?
Sitting in the back of the sleek luxury car, Hayden's pitch-black eyes narrowed slightly. His gaze was like the abyss of an ocean on a winter's nightโthe eerie calm right before a catastrophic tsunami.
Seeing Colin dawdling, Hayden's impatience spiked.
"Forget it. I'll do it."
He dialed Zoe's number again. The only response was a busy signal. No matter how many times he hit redial, the result was exactly the same.
A vein throbbed violently in Hayden's temple. Was she seriously going to carry on a blatant affair and still shamelessly refuse to sign the divorce papers?
He pressed his lips into a hard line, glaring at his phone as the automated voice delivered its death sentence.
The number you have dialed is currently unavailable. Please try again later.
She had blocked him.
A cold, imperceptible sneer curled the corners of his mouth.
The absolute irony of it. Did she really think blocking his number would get her out of a divorce? She should have thought about the consequences before she went out parading around with Garrett.
"Call her," Hayden ordered coolly. "Tell her I am waiting for her at City Hall."
Colin was stunned. The boss clearly wasn't joking. Over the years, Zoe had been the one to demand a divorce on several occasions, and Hayden had dragged his feet every time. This was the first time the boss was initiating it.
Wasn't there a prenuptial agreement? As far as Colin knew, there were still nearly ten months left before the contract expired. Was things heating up with Sienna? Had Hayden finally decided he couldn't stand being tied down to his wife anymore?
Burning with anxiety, Colin knew he couldn't exactly rat his boss out to old Mrs. Thorne while sitting right in front of him. He had no choice but to follow orders and dial Zoe's number.
