Hayden's voice was flat, but the weight of his words made it clear to everyone that he wasn't bluffing.
Zoe finally looked up at him. Sienna, who had been daintily picking at her food, froze in place, her expression shifting.
Garrett frowned. Hayden had just claimed he didn't care who managed the project as long as someone took responsibility. Now he was threatening to nuke the entire deal if Zoe didn't stay on board.
The severity of dropping the project wasn't just about losing capital. It was about industry optics. No one wanted to take over a half-finished project someone else had abruptly abandoned. Even if the tech was sound and profitable, sudden withdrawals signaled toxic internal issues, leading to permanent stagnation.
Anyone who thought Hayden wasn't deliberately targeting Zoe was completely delusional.
Sienna's face paled briefly, but Zoe just smiled. “You didn't have this strong of a reaction when I initially stepped down, Mr. Thorne. We're almost three months into this. It's in the late stages, and now you suddenly want to scrap it?”
The realization hit Sienna, and the dark clouds in her eyes instantly cleared into bright elation.
Hayden was punishing Zoe over the Terrence situation. He was forcing her back onto the team to make her life miserable.
Ethan chuckled, having heard the rumors as well.
Zoe's actions were beyond unhinged. Sienna and her mother—who was Zoe's own biological mother—had kindly invited her over for dinner. In a fit of psychotic rage, Zoe had clashed with her stepfather, fabricated a ridiculous lie, and successfully sent him to prison for a decade.
Even the Thorne family's influence couldn't bail him out. In cases of assault, a woman's accusation practically guaranteed a conviction ninety-nine percent of the time.
Accusations like that had sent actual husbands to prison, let alone a stepdad condemned by Zoe's baseless lies without a shred of physical evidence.
Ethan had been utterly appalled when he heard. Zoe's lack of a moral compass was astounding. It was no wonder Hayden had finally lost his patience and decided to crush her.
Ethan certainly didn't believe Zoe possessed any real talent to earn her spot at Sterling. Hayden was clearly just laying the groundwork to avenge Sienna.
He had never really liked Sienna in the past, but seeing Zoe's psychotic behavior unfold made him side with her out of sheer disgust.
Hayden stared at Zoe with icy detachment. “Want to test me?”
