Zoe immediately realized she had lost her composure.
She quickly apologized.
"I'm so sorry, baby. Mommy didn't mean to. I was just asking."
It was strangeβwhy did she care so much anyway?
She had already looked into Sienna's husband.
He had died in a plane crash four years ago, leaving Sienna a widow shortly after the wedding.
If this 'Holden' kid really was Hayden and Sienna's child, wouldn't that actually play right into Zoe's hands?
She found this entire marriage to Hayden to be a massive, absurd joke.
Five years ago, she and Hunter had been totally in love.
Thinking back to the past, Zoe suddenly remembered someone.
She tapped her forehead in realization.
How could she forget Nadia Fox?
Nadia was her absolute best friend, a brilliant law student.
If anyone knew the truth about what happened, it was Nadia.
And Nadia would never lie to her.
After feeding Lily, helping her with her homework, getting her washed up, and putting her to bed, Zoe finally had a moment to herself.
She slipped into her bedroom and dialed Nadia's number.
She dug the contact out of her phone.
The moment the line connected, Zoe was so thrilled she nearly rolled off the bed.
"Nadia! It's Zoe! Are you free? Let's get drinks at our old spot."
There was absolute dead silence on the line. No static, no breathing. It was as if no one was there.
"Hello?"
The call was definitely connected, so why wasn't anyone talking?
"Is my phone broken? Nadia?"
She kept trying. It took a grueling three minutes before a voice finally drifted through the speaker.
"HehβMs. Lynd. I thought you were dead."
Zoe was completely bewildered.
It was definitely Nadia's voice, but her tone was entirely wrong.
"That place was demolished years ago. We'll go to a different bar. But are you absolutely sure you can drink?"
Zoe nodded furiously. "Of course I can! My daughter is asleep. Can we meet up right now?"
Hearing Nadia say yes made her want to cry with relief.
She had so much to dump on her best friend.
All these awful people, the ridiculous situations, her utterly chaotic emotions, and this completely screwed-up marriage to Hayden.
Nadia texted her the address to a bar.
Zoe quickly slipped out of Lily's room, making sure the girl was dead asleep, and called a cab.
Less than ten minutes later, she hopped into the back of a bright orange taxi, feeling like a bird finally freed from its cage.
At that exact moment, Hayden's car pulled up to the estate. He watched with his own eyes as Zoe slid into the back of the cab.
She was wearing a blindingly sparkly minidress and carrying the fifty-thousand-dollar designer bag he had recently bought her.
As the two vehicles passed each other, Hayden caught a glimpse of Zoe through the slowly rising window. Even beneath her heavy makeup, he could see a radiant smile lighting up her face.
Hayden checked his watch. It was exactly 11:00 PM.
His expression instantly darkened into pure fury.
