That night, Zoe had felt blissful.
After he found his release, he would head to the shower, and she would slink back to her own room in disgrace.
Looking back on it now, she had been treated worse than a call girl.
Hayden's current behavior was entirely worthless in her eyes.
Just the sight of him made her blood boil. She stumbled slightly, nearly crashing straight into his chest. Luckily, she caught herself at the absolute last second, planting her feet firmly. To an onlooker, however, it still looked like Hayden had caught her in a warm embrace.
Director Yates heard her car pull up, only to be greeted by the sight of Hayden holding a beautiful woman in his arms. A jolt went through him, followed by an indescribable wave of sour jealousy.
He distinctly remembered that this couple had already finalized their divorce. Why was Hayden still putting his hands all over her, holding her so intimately?
"Did seeing your ex-boyfriend after all these years make you so ecstatic you can't even stand up straight?"
Hayden's tone was drenched in acid, though it was unclear whether he was angry at Zoe or at himself.
"That's right. Thinking about all that past sweetness made my knees weak. I just couldn't hold myself up."
Zoe rolled her eyes at him, tossing the words out casually, but Hayden twisted their meaning entirely.
A cold scoff escaped his lips. "Knees weak? The night you drugged me to get me into bed, someone was untouched. Where did you get the chance to have weak knees with an ex-boyfriend?"
Zoe's face burned crimson.
Was he out of his mind? Given where they were, how could he just blur out something so explicit?
There were armed guards standing right beside them. Their training must have been immaculate, because not a single muscle twitched on their faces after hearing that exchange.
Timothy walked over, his gaze dropping to her legs with genuine concern. "Ms. Lynd, did you injure your leg again?"
Zoe usually faked injuries just to avoid Hayden.
Timothy wasn't about to let this opportunity slide. If she was really hurt, he was more than ready to carry her in his arms or on his back.
Flustered and unsure if he had overheard Hayden's crude remarks, Zoe rushed to clarify.
"Not at all. My new shoes are just a little stiff. Thank you for asking, Director Yates."
With Timothy there, Zoe seized the chance to put some distance between herself and Hayden.
Trailing behind them, Hayden watched Zoe and Timothy chatting and laughing together.
He didn't know if they were doing it on purpose, but their bodies kept drifting closer and closer.
Hayden's expression turned somber. Just then, his phone rang.
"Speak."
His voice was dark, carrying a terrifying edge.
The person on the other end hesitated for a brief second before reporting, "Mr. Thorne, we found him."
Hayden's pupils dilated slightly, his grip on the phone tightening involuntarily. "Good. Keep a close eye on him. Report any movements immediately."
He had been laying the groundwork for years, and he finally had a solid lead.
Ahead of him, Zoe was walking further away, but Hayden's tense expression didn't soften.
Getting his wife back was paramount; he needed to handle the immediate situation first.
