In a situation like this, anyone could be a spy—except for the two of them, absolutely.

Hayden's execution was flawless, and it was obvious he had no intention of letting Timothy in on the secret.

"Director Yates, we'll be heading out now," Zoe said.

Timothy watched them walk away, a bitter taste lingering in his mouth.

Before he could even turn back inside, Harvey Sterling rolled up.

The moment he stepped out of his car, he asked, "Is Ms. Lynd around?" Timothy just stared at him, utterly speechless.

Things were chaotic enough already. He couldn't understand Commissioner Sterling. Out of all the eligible women out there, he just had to lock his sights on Zoe as his future daughter-in-law.

Left with no choice, Timothy braced himself to deal with the entitled politician's son.

"Ms. Lynd just left with Commander Thorne. It hasn't even been five minutes."

Checking his watch, Timothy decided to just hand over her location.

Harvey looked crestfallen for a second, but his eyes quickly lit up again.

"With Commander Thorne? Aren't they divorced?"

Timothy's patience was wearing razor-thin; he was half a second away from cursing him out.

No shit they're divorced. If you've got the guts, go throw a wrench in it and make sure they never speak again.

Facing Harvey, he forced his rising temper down.

"Yeah. But she didn't look too thrilled about it. I'm tied up with work here, but if you've got the time, you could always go check it out."

Harvey didn't even hesitate. "Damn right I'm going. I heard from Command HQ that they made a massive scene at The Military Personnel Command. They even did a home visit before granting special approval for the divorce. There's basically zero chance of them getting back together."

Harvey glanced at Timothy and suddenly grabbed his hand.

"Director Yates, I consider you a brother. My dad is already filing the paperwork to have me transferred to your unit. If you've got the time, keep an eye on Ms. Lynd for me. If things work out between us, I'll write you a massive check as a thank you."

With that, Harvey sped off in his car.

Timothy practically choked on his own anger. He stared at the disappearing taillights, taking a long moment to process the sheer audacity.

The absolute nerve of the kid. Timothy hadn't even sorted out his own feelings for Zoe, and now this punk wanted him to play matchmaker.

Suffocated by frustration, Timothy stalked back inside.

Meanwhile, Zoe climbed into the passenger seat of Hayden's SUV. She fired off her question immediately. "What did you mean back in the control room?" Unbothered, Hayden gripped the steering wheel, keeping a steady pace toward Lily's preschool.

"Do we have a situation?"

"Yeah," Hayden grunted. "There's a car that's been tailing us."

Without realizing it, Zoe's muscles coiled with tension.

"Is it them?"

"Hard to say," Hayden replied. "It might not even be a threat. Someone tailing us this openly in broad daylight probably isn't looking for a fatal shootout."

Zoe's heart stayed in her throat.

Whatever their motive, the mere fact they were being followed was deeply unsettling.

If they were coming for her, she wasn't scared. Dying for her country was at least an honorable end.

But if they were targeting Lily, that was a blow she simply couldn't survive.

"I called Yara Quinn to come pick you up. Stay away from Lily's school for now. We'll split up. No matter what, Lily's safety comes first."

Zoe fiercely disagreed. "What if they're actually after Lily? Or what if they want you? I'll go get Lily, and you drive away."
