The words had crossed the line into a direct attack.

"Garrett, what nonsense are you spouting? You're going to make yourself a laughingstock."

Sylvia's face flushed red with shame and anger. Since when did the son she raised become so shameless as to start slandering others?

Zoe and Hayden were already at each other's throats. If her son kept acting foolish out of baseless jealousy, he really might end up single for the rest of his life.

Treating Zoe as a friend was one thing, but he was going to end up driving away the already aloof Officer Quinn with his temper.

"My apologies, Officer Quinn. I genuinely didn't know." Garrett's sarcasm left the straightforward Yara completely baffled.

"Mr. Thorne and I have a superior-subordinate relationship. I was trained under his command and entered the police force when I was just a teenager. Of course I've known him longer than Ms. Lynd has.

Ms. Lynd doesn't like being called Mrs. Thorne, so there's nothing wrong with my addressing her this way, is there? Mr. Kendall, do you have a problem with Mr. Thorne? Why?"

Yara spoke plainly and directly. She had no hidden agendas and didn't understand convoluted social games.

Garrett froze, finally realizing he had gone entirely too far.

His eyes darkened as it dawned on him that he really had lost his mind for a moment.

"I'm sorry."

It was unclear whether the apology was meant for Zoe or Yara.

Yara ignored him.

After all, she was largely indifferent to everyone in the world except for her own sister.

"Garrett, no one is blaming you. You don't need to beat yourself up. Where there's smoke, there's fire. You didn't falsely accuse anyone, so there's no need to apologize."

At least, that was Zoe's perspective.

Even if Hayden were standing right there, Zoe would have said the exact same thing.

"Are you Mr. Kendall? Finally decided to show your face, huh?"

The man laughed wickedly.

Hayden replied, "You're extorting someone and you don't even know who they are? I'm the father of the child you took, not Mr. Kendall."

The man paused, not quite grasping Hayden's meaning.

"This kid isn't a Kendall?" The man lowered his phone, glared at Julie standing behind him, and slapped her across the face without asking for details.

Julie was stunned. The slap left her ears ringing, and she had no idea what was happening.

"Damn it, didn't you say this was the Kendall family's grandson? Whose bastard did you steal to trick me?" The man had been holding little Ian for four or five days without hearing a peep from the Kendalls.

Rumor had it they were doing renovations on their estate, but there was no word of anything else.
