Zoe froze.
Philip seemed different from the man she remembered.
She managed a strained smile.
"Grandmother Eleanorβ"
"I just spoke to Mr. Thorne about the business. The bank loan is still pending approval. Zoe, he just gave his word. As long as you're willing to beg him, he won't make things difficult for the Lynd family."
Philip had no patience to hear about Grandmother Eleanor's condition.
All he cared about was the pending corporate loan.
If it wasn't approved this week, he wouldn't be able to fund their billion-dollar project. Not only would their partners sue him, but the bank would also demand their money back.
Bankruptcy could happen overnight. The Lynd family's assets had already shrunk significantly. He had assumed that when Arthur passed away, he would naturally inherit the company.
It was a massive corporation whose prestige once overshadowed even Thorne Group.
But Clara had taken the majority of his older brother's fortune and married Terrence Winters. By the time the company fell into Philip's hands, it was nothing but an empty shell.
Zoe found it hard to believe that the man who used to dote on her would tell her to go beg Hayden, even using the word 'serve' to describe her marriage to him.
"Go on, Zoe. Don't keep Mr. Thorne waiting. I'll take care of Eleanor."
Philip's eyes were full of expectation, but Zoe was only left with profound disappointment.
She lowered her gaze, her thick lashes trembling slightly with each breath.
The joy she had felt upon seeing Philip quietly vanished, replaced entirely by confusion and a cold sense of desolation.
The light in her eyes faded, and her previous warmth toward him cooled.
"I will."
Philip kept his eyes glued to her. Zoe knew he wouldn't relax until he watched her get into the car and leave with Hayden.
It felt as though...
Hayden's dark gaze met hers, and his heart inexplicably clenched.
He couldn't help but soften his tone.
"If you want to apologize, just say it."
As long as she promised him she would never see Hunter again, he would forgive her.
"Why are you targeting Philip? What did he ever do to you?"
The sudden sound of ripping paper echoed as Hayden tore the magazine in his hands. A car abruptly swerved in front of them, and Colin hit the brakes, cursing under his breath.
Zoe's eyes were filled with grief, confusion, and above all, accusation directed right at Hayden.
The gentle expression Hayden had maintained for less than two seconds vanished, replaced by an explosive, suffocating rage. He wanted nothing more than to strangle the reckless woman sitting in front of him.
As his wife, sneaking out to meet another man without his permission had already crossed a massive line.
And yet, just moments ago, he had been thinking that if she offered even a single apology, he would let the whole thing slide.
